</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD width=10> </TD><TD>[font=Arial, Helvetica]Utah's top quarterback recruit has withdrawn his commitment, citing uncertainty in Urban Meyer's job status at the school.

Josh Portis, of Woodland Hills, Calif., told Rivals.com that he was frustrated that Meyer would not give him a straight answer when asked if the coach was staying at Utah.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to coach Meyer yet," Portis told Rivals.com late Tuesday. "They haven't really returned my calls."

Portis and Meyer last spoke on Saturday. Portis is considered a top five prospect in the country, a dual threat at quarterback. He could be considered an heir apparent to Alex Smith, who has been the key to Meyer's spread-option offense.

Portis is 6-feet-4, 200 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.57 seconds. He now lists Kansas State, Maryland, Oregon, Washington and LSU as his top choices. Kansas State seems to be the frontrunner. His school choice is critical because Portis intends to be a mid-semester enrollee and needs to decide his future in the next two weeks.

I guess he is not returning his calls...hmmm.....this could be the norm for alot of kids the next few weeks until these jobs are filled.

Or Gainseville. Out of the 5 people I saw on TV last night talking about this situation, all 5 said the FLorida job would be a lot better situation for Meyer. We'll see.

I have heard that a lot, but he was so close to being the coach at ND last go round, he will have to take the job. his currenty contract has 3 outs in it, TOSU, SCum and ND

The story did not say where the meeting would take place.
John Heisler, Notre Dame's associate athletic director, would not comment to the Associated Press or say if athletic director Kevin White was in South Bend.

Utah athletic director Chris Hill told the AP he wouldn't comment on the report, but that his school would attempt to keep Meyer, who helped make the Utes a high-profile team in just two seasons. This year, Utah is poised to become the first team from a mid-major conference to crack the Bowl Championship Series.

"There's a lot of things we can do, and we'll do everything we can to make this right for Urban, Shelley and their family," he said.

A message left with Meyer's assistant Thursday was not immediately returned.

Meyer was the receivers coach at Notre Dame during 1996-2000, leaving the school for his first head coaching job at Bowling Green.

He quickly turned around the Falcons, going 8-3 and 9-3 before moving to Utah in 2003. The Utes were 10-2 last season and are 11-0 this season and ranked fifth in the nation.

Notre Dame fired Tyrone Willingham as football coach on Tuesday after he posted a 21-15 record in three seasons.

Someone had better tell Chris Hill -- It ain't a fair fight.

What are they going to offer Urban to stay -- a lifetime ski pass or two Vestal Virgins?

You would think Meyer would contact his recruits (esp. the ones that have verbaled and are of high national caliber). He just has to say he is looking at his options, he wants that recruit, and no matter where he is, he wants that recruit as his __________(what ever the position he plays) for the future.

Not returning calls will just tick the kid off and the Meyer is sol...

he also needs a numbering system to let each kid know what number they are. for instance, your best recruit would be your #1 guy, while a 2 or 3 star sleeper would be your #1 guy.
