Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

Yes, the same Manny Diaz who just took the Temple job. Crazy, if true.

Sources: Manny Diaz to be the new head coach at Miami

As a parting gift, Miami will pay Temple a $4 million buyout to pry Diaz out of his the-ink-is-still-drying contract.

New HC Manny Diaz abandons Temple, replaces Mark Richt at Miami

The next time fans/media decry an unpaid college football player skipping out on a bowl game, keep this in mind.

On Dec. 13, Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was confirmed as the new head coach at Temple. In the midst of the Early National Signing Period days later, the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, Diaz, as the new Owls’ head coach, “contacted every recruit who made a commitment to the Owls, hoping to have as many stay the course as possible.”

Exactly 17 days after Diaz was hired by Temple, Mark Richt announced that he had decided to retire as the Hurricanes head coach. Showing yet again that adult coaches aren’t held to the same standard as teenage recruits, Diaz officially abandoned those very same prospects he persuaded to stay the course as it was announced late Sunday night that Diaz will replace Richt as Miami’s next head football coach.

With Miami reportedly set to hire Manny Diaz, could Greg Schiano be in running at Temple?
Schiano had been interested in the position before Diaz was originally hired.

Now, you might be asking why an Ohio State blog is writing about the coaching machinations of an ACC school of middling national relevance. Well, before Diaz was hired at Temple, Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano had reportedly been interested in the Owls’ position.

Might be a head coach opportunity for Sciano here.

Might be a head coach oppertunity for Sciano here.

Only if he takes Bill and Taver with him.

There's been rumored strife between wvu and Holgorsen for years. IIRC, his buyout made it almost impossible to fire him, and he hasn't been a hot commodity. Now that there's an opening with mutual interest, it coule be an out for both of them.

Not to mention living in Houston vs Morgantown.

Hearing rumors Holgerson is leaving WVU for houston.

Source: Houston finalizing deal with West Virginia's Dana Holgorsen

The Houston Cougars are finalizing a deal to make Dana Holgorsen their next head coach and are expected to announce his hire as early as Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the search told ESPN.

The West Virginia coach, who is 61-41 with the Mountaineers, will receive a five-year contract worth $20 million, the source said. It would make him the highest-paid coach of a Group of 5 program.

SBNation.com first reported the news of Holgorsen's imminent hire and contract figure.

Since the end of the season, West Virginia and Holgorsen had been negotiating an extension, pay raise and larger buyout on his contract, according to a source.

But Holgorsen asked for more than West Virginia was willing to offer, leading to a stalemate.

Another source told ESPN that Holgorsen has not been in touch with his coaching staff since the 34-18 loss to Syracuse in the Camping World Bowl. Holgorsen stayed in Orlando after the game instead of returning to the team.

Picked up a random post on MgoBlog that Al Washington (Michigan LB coach who grew up in CBus) will be moving to OSU right after the bowl game. "Insider" says it is a done deal. Nobody responding so I don't give it much credibility - but something to keep an eye out for.

Alot of smoke drifting about on that one from various boards. Apparently him and Day coached together at BC, he's from Columbus and his dad played for Woody. Could be one to keep an eye on.
Best thing I saw on MGoBlow was "Don't our coaches have non-compete clauses?" The response was "Yes, Yes they do. UM coaches can't compete with OSU." :slappy:

I've also read on 11W that Day also reached out to one of the LB coaches at UK, Matt House. A possible plan b. Though Washington would be an absolute home run hire. He was the sole reason that scUM was in it so long for Harrison, and arguably their best recruiter on staff. Not sure of his region, but I'd be excited over this hire, as the scUM LBs were their strength on defense and he can bring in talent

Oh yeah, and hes also from Columbus and has family that is osu alum... And he spent 1yr coaching DL at UC under Fickell
