Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

UNLV fires Tony Sanchez

Saturday’s game will be a farewell on two fronts for UNLV. It’s the Rebels’ last game at Sam Boyd Stadium, and the last game under head coach Tony Sanchez. The program announced Monday that Sanchez will be let go following Saturday’s curtain call against Nevada.

“I’m grateful for my time here and proud of the strides we made as a football program, on and off the field,” Sanchez said in a statement. “I’m proud of our student-athletes and our staff and how we have positioned the program for future success. I look forward to finishing the season strong with these young men. I would also like to thank our community, our alumni and our donors for their generous support in making the Fertitta Football Complex a reality.”

Hired directly from Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School, Sanchez went 85-5 with six state championships from 2009-14, then saw his fortunes flip at the next level, going 19-40 and 12-27 in conference play with the Rebels. UNLV failed to reach the postseason in five seasons leading the program, peaking at 5-7 in 2017. UNLV is 3-8 heading into Saturday.

“We appreciate everything that Tony has done for our university and football program,” AD Desiree Reed-Francois said. “He made us better. Because of his work and his vision, we have the best facilities in the Mountain West and rival some of the best in the country. What he has done for the football community in Las Vegas during his five years at UNLV and his six years at Bishop Gorman High School has been remarkable. Further, our football team has made great progress academically under Tony’s leadership. We wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

Sanchez’s candidacy was backed by brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta of UFC fame, and it’s telling that Sanchez’s main accomplishment was the building of the $34 million football complex bearing the Fertitta name.

That complex and the new stadium being built by the Las Vegas Raiders will allow the next UNLV head coach a greater chance at hitting the proverbial jackpot than Sanchez had.

Wasn't Gus a HS coach under Houston Nutt, and went straight to Offensive Coordinator?

Nutt was on the hot seat in 2005 for conservative play calling and an unimaginative offense. He hired Malzahn to install a more creative, up-tempo, no-huddle offense -- and to secure the commitments of five blue-chip recruits Malzahn had at Springdale.

In 2006 they opened with USC and got their doors blown off. The up-tempo offense lead to them losing the TOP margin 2:1, and so they almost immediately scraped Malzahn's playbook and went back to their old offense, which wasn't necessarily a bad idea since they had Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis all on the roster. As Malzahn lost control of the offense, there were rumors the defensive staff members wouldn't even refer to him by name, calling him "High School," and Malzahn at one point was alleged to have called Nutt "a huge dork."

Malzahn left after that one season to go work with Todd Graham at Tulsa.

New Mexico announces Bob Davie will not return to coach program in 2020

The Bob Davie era of New Mexico football is officially over. Or, it will be after this upcoming weekend.

New Mexico announced on Monday Davie will not return to coach the football program in 2020. The school also confirmed Davie will coach the team for the regular-season finale against Utah State this Saturday.

“After meeting with Coach Davie this morning, we both agree that the time has come for a new direction for our football program,” New Mexico Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez said in a released statement. “I’m appreciative of the work that coach Davie has done at UNM.”

Davie was hired by New Mexico in 2011. Since then, New Mexico accumulated a record of just 35-63 over the past eight seasons. Despite the losing record, the 35 wins are the third-most in program history, which is perhaps more a testament to the longevity Davie managed to have with New Mexico more than anything else. New Mexico did go to back-to-back bowl games in 2015 and 2016, with one loss in the New Mexico Bowl in 2015 and a victory in the same bowl game the following season. Those were the only two winning seasons for the Lobos under Davie.

Of course it's in Texas.

Another Texas school "floats his name":

Art Briles’ name somehow still coming up for jobs, the latest being opening at FCS Lamar

While the bulk of head coach firings at the FBS level will happen after Thanksgiving, those at the FCS level are not quite so lucky with the regular season wrapped up in the other half of Division I.

One school who now has an opening is Lamar, who let go of head coach Mike Schultz on Monday after a 13-22 record over three seasons leading the program. The program in Beaumont, Texas naturally made it a point to emphasize that they’ll be looking to ties to the Lone Star State when it comes to their next head coach and, somewhat sadly, to the surprise of nobody that has resulted in one rather infamous name being connected to the gig in the ensuing days.

That would be Art Briles, the scandal-ridden former Baylor head coach who has already generated a number of negative headlines in the past few months after taking over a Texas high school football team.

“His name did float around at the meeting today,” Lamar booster club president James Patton confirmed to the Beaumont Enterprise. “It was acknowledged and talked about, but we didn’t specifically dwell on it. He does have a recognizable name that could bring some attention to the university.”

Shit, if attention is what they're looking for, Lamar should hire Kim Jong-Un.

UTSA fires Frank Wilson after 4-8 season

It’s the Sunday after the conclusion of the regular season in college football which can only mean one thing for many on the chopping block: it’s firing season.

Sadly for Frank Wilson, he was among the first to be let go on Sunday as UTSA confirmed a change was being made and the head coach was being relieved of his duties after posting a 4-8 season in 2019.

“I want to thank Coach Wilson for his efforts on behalf of the football program and the university, and for his commitment to his student-athletes,” AD Lisa Campos said in a statement. “As only the second head coach in our history, Coach Wilson continued to build on the foundation of a young football program and we are grateful for his contributions to UTSA.”

Wilson went 19-29 overall with the Roadrunners in four seasons, highlighted by the program’s first ever bowl game in 2016. UTSA concluded the regular season on Saturday with a 41-27 loss at Louisiana Tech.

2016 = 4-8 (2-6)
2017 = 7-6 (4-4) lost bowl game
2018 = 8-5 (4-4) lost bowl game
2019 = 6-6 (3-5) bowl eligible

Just sayin'; I don't see anybody doing much better at Missouri. They will never be a perennial contender in the SEC East, they may get to be competitive against Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and USC; however, they'll never be on a par with Georgia or Florida.
