Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

This is only Petersen's 3rd year as a HC, the same as Graham and Gill

Petersen was Hawkin's hot shot coordinator before he became head coach. I think that's in his favor.

Before Gill coached at Buffalo, he was working in the front office for the Packers.

I think in Graham's case, Gus Malzahn, his OC, is the one who is going to benefit the most from this. Graham has always been a defensive guy, and Tulsa's defense is nothing to write home about.

Yeah well we have seen how the hotshot coordinator thing has worked out for Chizik at Iowa State.

And that 70 spot that Tulsa gave up...yeah, probably not going to help

ND's Haywood to interview at Washington

Mike Haywood's "personal reasons" for missing Notre Dame practices this week translate to "career advancement."
The Irish offensive coordinator will interview for Washington's soon-to-be-vacant head coaching job Thursday, a source confirmed to the Tribune on Wednesday night. Haywood still was orchestrating the Notre Dame offense when the team drubbed Washington 33-7 on Oct. 25, and Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham was fired the next week effective at the end of the season.
In the week before that game, Haywood called Washington athletic director Scott Woodward "one of my best friends." Haywood has ties to both Woodward and Washington president Mark Emmert, having worked with both when all three were at LSU.
Haywood did not call plays against Navy last weekend after missing a day of practice to attend his cousin's funeral. Irish coach Charlie Weis will call the plays for the remainder of the regular season as well after saying Tuesday that Haywood would miss practices this week for "personal reasons."
Haywood declined to meet with the media Tuesday night. He was not in attendance at Irish practice Wednesday. A Notre Dame spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Haywood's chances at the job? That's difficult to determine. He has no head-coaching experience and is not known as a top-flight recruiter. Names such as Fresno State's Pat Hill and Boise State's Chris Petersen have circulated in the rumor mill regarding the Washington opening. Hard to see how Haywood's matches them.
But clearly Haywood has very close ties to the two decision-makers in Washington's process. And one never knows whether the alleged first-tier candidates such as Hill or Petersen have said privately or through intermediaries that they simply aren't interested.

Franchione has tossed his hat in the ring for the K-State job.

Kansas State looks ahead to attracting new football coach
By JEFFREY MARTIN, The Kansas City Star

...

"The Big 12 North is about as scary as an episode of 'Barney.' You don't need a defense to succeed. We've been known to condone scheduling nothing but chumps out of conference. And if you want to recruit nothing but jucos, we're cool with that, too.

"What they won't tell you: We trap-doored the last guy after 2 1/2 seasons. And the talent pool around Manhattan is shallower than Paris Hilton."

A different outlook was necessary. Dennis Franchione, the former Texas A&M coach who admits having an interest in the vacancy, insists K-State is "a great job."

"Coach Snyder made it into something special," Franchione said. "It's in a great conference, and the people - the K-State people I know are some of the most understanding people in the world."

The pros, according to Franchione, are the program's recent tradition as a selling point, the expectations of being successful, and Manhattan, which he deemed "a wonderful town." As for the cons, it was the same perceived issues that have been trotted out against K-State forever - not a long, rich tradition and because of Manhattan's isolated location, recruiting is difficult.

Source: Illinois assistant Locksley is fourth to interview at Clemson -- ESPiN

Mike Locksley would be a great hire for the Tigers and would be a big blow to Illinois if they lost him. If Locksley does get the job, would be interesting to see if Dabo Swinney gets interest from the Illini to replace him as OC/recruiting coordinator...

At the least, great to see him get considered for a pretty big job like that, though I'd love to see him as a HC here in the Big Ten.

I hope Locksley gets a shot at a HC at Clemson.I was hoping we would get him at Tennessee last year, but oh well we see how that turned out.

The other plus side for hiring Locksley is below:

Bill Snyder took Kansas State to bowls in 11 consecutive seasons during his first stint in Manhattan.

Former Kansas State coach Bill Snyder will return to coach the program and will be introduced at a news conference on Monday, sources said Sunday.
Snyder will return to the Wildcats after three years away. Snyder, who is 69 years old, compiled a 136-68-1 record at Kansas State from 1989-2005. He replaces Ron Prince, who finished with a 5-7 record this season and 17-20 overall in three seasons with the Wildcats.
A news conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT on Monday.
A source indicated to The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle that Snyder would be given a five-year contract worth $1.8 million per season.
Snyder originally arrived at Kansas State in 1989 after serving on Hayden Fry's staff at Iowa as quarterbacks coach. His team started with a 1-10 record during the first season. But he turned the program around with a winning record by his third season.
Snyder was one of the nation's most successful coaches from 1993 through 2003, leading the Wildcats to at least nine victories in eight straight seasons and 10 times during that 11-season span. Snyder led the Wildcats to at least 10 victories seven times during his tenure -- the only time that has ever happened in school history.
He led the Wildcats to 11 straight bowl appearances from 1993-2003.

SDSU fires Long after three seasons despite AD's vote of confidence

Two top SDSU officials spent the last two weeks raising more than $1 million in private money to help buy out the remaining two years of Chuck Long's contract.

SAN DIEGO -- Chuck Long spent the last 4? weeks presumably thinking his job as San Diego State's football coach was safe through next season.
His bosses, president Stephen Weber and athletic director Jeff Schemmel, spent the last two weeks working behind Long's back to raise just more than $1 million in private money to help buy out the remaining two years of his contract.
Once the money was secured, Long was gone. The school announced Sunday that Long was fired; the coach was informed of the move by athletic director Jeff Schemmel on Saturday morning, several hours before the Aztecs' surprising 42-21 win over UNLV. San Diego State finished 2-10, the school's first 10-loss season.

.
.
Hired in December 2005 with no previous head coaching experience, Long was 9-27 in three seasons.

Greetings,

I work for a financial firm that handles a number of high profile college football coaches and just thought I would pass this along. Jim Tressel has been approached by at least one (and maybe a second) NFL team to gauge his intetest and he had no interest at all.

Also:
-ND is looking for a way (money) to move in another direction.
-Michigan is standing behind RR for one more year. Emphasis on one.
-BK at UC is moving on.
-MD at MSU is holding fast and it will take alot to get him away.
-Get used to JoePa. All those rumors were entertaining.
-LK may be on the outside looking in because of his style.

Nice info. Not surprised by anything except the Lane Kiffin part. From the way the media has been talking it seemed like he was a shoe in to land one of the bigger openings.
