Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

Eastern Michigan hires English

DETROIT (AP) -- Eastern Michigan has hired Ron English, making him the fifth black head football coach in major college football, a person familiar with the contract agreement told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school hasn't announced its decision.
Eastern Michigan scheduled a news conference for Monday.
The other black coaches among the 119 teams in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision are Buffalo's Turner Gill, Miami's Randy Shannon, Houston's Kevin Sumlin and New Mexico's Mike Locksley.

Ellerson is a good coach

Yes, he is. He was the defensive coordinator for Hawaii in the late 80's/early 90's, and he did a great job (yes, UH used to have a defense). As a side note, Paul Johnson was on that staff as OC, and current Navy Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo was just getting his coaching career started. Quite a staff that UH had for a short while. Bob Wagner, who is from Ohio, put together that staff, and was the head coach.

Seems like there will be some changes around the Big 10, in terms of coordinators. Sounds like Minny, Michigan, and Illinois are getting new DC's. I'm sure we will hear much more after signing day.

Coaching Hires: comings and goings

OK, someone had to start this discussion. My goal is to stimulate discussion as to who the colleges in question should legitimately target as their new coaches - who would listen and could reasonably be expected to accept an offer, and who would likely give the best results.

My start:

Michigan: Chip Kelly. Yes, I know Rich Rodriguez hasn't been fired yet. Do you seriously think Brandon is so stupid as to let him stay if he can find a good replacement? Kelly has proven he can win big in major-conference football with the kind of smurfs Rodriguez has recruited the last 3 years, so this is a no-brainer to me.

Miami: Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh would struggle at Michigan with the shrimps DickRod has brought on board, but he has the QB experience that could conceivably bring Jacory Harris to a level of competency that approaches mediocrity - which given the other talent at The U could lead to an ACC championship in his first year. Then he could bolt immediately thereafter to coach the Dolphins. Dan Mullen comes in a close second if Harbaugh proves to be gay and hence prefers to remain in the SF Bay area.

Minnesota: Brady Hoke. This is realistically as high as the Gophers can aim, but Hoke could probably get Minnesota to the point where they could finish in the top half of the league every five years or so. And make a bowl game most years. In other words, Glen Mason redux.

Indiana: Mike Leach. Don't kid yourself, Leach carries more baggage than Paris Hilton on a month-long trip to Gstaad, so this is as good a gig as he'll get. But he's desperate, and so is IU, so he'll say yes to the Whosyers. Thereafter Leach will induce fear in all the upper-tier Big Ten coaches, who realize he'll beat them every four years or so with recruits he can find at the local sheltered workshop.

The rest of the job openings are uninteresting to me, but feel free to add commentary on them if you'd like.

I know they might be impatient in Ann Arbor, but I think they need to look for someone who gives them the best shot at long term success, not just who can coach the players perfectly within a system. Assuming Kelly would be interested, he would be bringing the exact same style of offense in yea..but I think that would be a hard sell. Lets keep in mind that Kelly hasn't achieved THAT much more then Rodriguez did @ WVU. He's got his team a berth in a national championship, but Rodriguez was just a couple plays of making it there himself and won for a longer period of time.

Kelly has started faster then Rodriguez did..but Kelly basically took over an already built program from Bellotti whereas Rodriguez was installing his system from scratch at WVU. Just think you'd have a hard time convincing the Michigan alumni to try the exact same thing again. Usually when you fire a coach you try to bring someone in that brings a different direction to the program.

Right now Michigan's offensive pieces aren't the major problem, by the time you fix the defensive woes you'll have had time to cycle in your guys on offense too.

Would love to see Leach join the Big Ten just for the lols

I think Chip Kelly will stay in Oregon for awhile. Harbaugh may struggle at first in Ann Arbor. Actually, he could struggle a few years. I still think long term he would be a good fit here and Michigan can get back to a pro style offense and a decent defense.

Dan Mullen could be a great fit at Miami. Miami has such an advantage over other schools because of South Florida and all the blue chips that come from the area. He knows Florida and was a great recruiter for Florida. He could get the athletes and put together a great offense.
