College Football Empires Map

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
This map asks the question, “What if college football games were played for more than just wins and losses, but also for land?”

Each FBS team is given a territory to begin the season, and if they lose, the team that beats them takes their land. Teams are then always in the process of trying to either regain land or expand their land by beating teams that have land.

The territories for each team are determined by which school is closest in straight-line distance to the geometric center of each county.

And here’s what it looks like after Week 1.

Due to the land obtained by Hawaii and Wyoming in Week 0, their Week 1 games were worth slightly more land than the average opener.

The 2018 College Football Empires Map, updated after Week 2

Arizona State and Ohio State are the 2018 map’s current stars, with lots of land on the line in Week 3.

Week 2’s largest land exchanges
  • The largest: Arizona State conquering Michigan State to take over both Michigan State’s and Utah State’s territories. MSU had beaten USU in Week 1, so the Sun Devils now control a large portion of the West in addition to a foothold in Michigan and the portion of Texas they took in Week 1.
  • Colorado took over a large chunk of land with its win over Nebraska, despite Nebraska’s heralded new general, Scott Frost.
  • Ohio State took two relatively small territories by area, but beating Rutgers meant taking over New York City and taking the lead in population controlled.

This is kind of cute.

But it seems destined to crown the winner of the Pac-(pick-a-number) most years, at least before the playoff. The Pac-12 Champion is very likely to control most of the area from the Rockies to the coast after the championship games. If their champion is left out of the playoff, they have a good chance to be the "land champion" after the playoffs too.

This year, the winner of the Iron Bowl might be in contention as that looks like it might be the Battle for Alaska.

mostly true but maybe not so bad since, ohio state, auburn, vanderbilt, minnesota, and cincy have already stolen decent chunks of the region that will be hard for them to get back. USC had a large chunk last year that tOSU conquered in the bowl game.

So if we decide we're going to care about this (apparently I care enough to have looked this up), then we care (more than just conference affiliation) that Illinois beats USF this weekend.

Because SMU had already lost, TCU has only their home territory to give this Saturday. The Buckeyes can pick up nothing next week vs Tulane as neither the wave nor their week 3 opponent (UAB) has any territory.

But if the Illini can hang on against the Bulls, that puts the Buckeyes in position to pick up a fair amount of territory by beating Penn State (who will presumably have beaten the Illini by then). Everything currently held by USF, Illinois and Penn State would then belong to OSU.

We can pick up a little the following week if the Hoosiers can hold serve between now and then (vs Ball State, MSU and Rutgers).

We likely pick up nothing the following week, as the Gophers will probably have just lost to the Hawkeyes. It's a homegame for Minnesota, but Iowa fans take over their place nearly as much as we take over Bloomington. If the Gophers can hold serve though, we pick up quite a bonanza that week.

There's precious little that we can pick up after that barring some major upsets, and that holds true until the conference championship game, at which point we might pick up less than you might think from Wisconsin.

Neither Wisconsin nor Iowa stand to gain anything in Week 3, and play each other in Week 4. After that, due to the way the schedule plays out, both could win out from there without picking up any territory, as all of the teams they play have a good chance of losing territory by then and then not having a chance to gain any back.

Long story short, it's possible the Buckeyes could win out and have only the following to show for it after the first Saturday in December:

Everything currently held by:

Wisconsin
Iowa
Penn State
Indiana if they beat MSU
and USF and Illinois if the Illini can pull it off this weekend.
