College Football Playoff (2016-2017 Season)

File this under "A broken clock is right twice a day"
Paul Johnson's plan for an 8 team playoff is one I can get behind:
http://georgiatech.blog.ajc.com/2016/07/28/paul-johnsons-proposal-for-an-eight-team-playoff/

Given this system the 2015 playoff would have been:

1. Clemson (ACC Champ)/8. Houston (best Mid Major)
2. Alabama (SEC)/7. Ohio State (wild card)
3. Michigan State (B1G)/6. Stanford (PAC 12)
4. Oklahoma (Big12)/5. Iowa (wild card)

Pretty compelling tournament if you ask me.

The potential for a revenge game against MSU without the absurd weather that was in that game would have been bad news for Sparty. Definitely would have been tough to get past Bama, but the way the Bucks played against Michigan leads me to believe that game may have been the game of that hypothetical 8 team playoff.

I agree that it's tough for a #8 team to claim to be worthy, but keeping it a four teams could keep a worthy #5 or even #6 out. I'm pretty sure that most of us feel that we were just as worthy as Sparty for being in the payoffs...maybe even Iowa.
Despite the head to head results, I think Ohio State was the better team vis a vis Sparty, so I'd certainly agree Ohio State was just as worthy to be in the playoffs. But, when the line is drawn, someone is going to get left out. The BCS drew the line at 2 teams getting a shot. Frankly, i was fine with that (I don't say that the BCS didn't have other problems, of course). Now the line is drawn at 4 and a team like Ohio State gets left out. I am OK with that. Of course I would have liked to have seen Ohio State win another NC last year. But I still just don't believe in a typical year teams rated 5, 6, 7, and 8 stake a legitimate claim on the title.

Sorry. It was a moment of weakness, I am over it now. Whew.

Now back to the way it should be.

Making lemonade out of lemons: Losing to Sparty was the only way the Bucks could get a shot at ND and wasn't that delicious?

Please excuse me if this thread is either unwanted or redundant.

As far as I can see, the only obvious help we need is one of the following...

-Washington loss
-West Virginia/Baylor winner to have a loss
-Clemson late loss
-Alabama two losses (I know)

Of course this is contigient on winning out. The only scenario I can see that would spark a debate would be Baylor/WVU winning out unimpressively vs a 12-1 Big10 champ OSU, or Clemson losing a close game and finishing the season blowing out everyone.

We also need Michigan to win their next 4 games or Penn State to lose 1.

I hate to even speculate about it given the way they looked last night but not sure that I agree.

If OSU wins out they are a 1 loss P5 conference champ with an impressive schedule.

They don't need any help other than maybe Penn State dropping one to clear up the potential 3 way tie break cluster.

SEC champ/B1G Champ/ACC champ and Pac 12 champ are all in as long as they are 1 loss or less this year imo. B12 and indy's are out ad have been for quite some time.

The only way we need Penn State to lose is if it's a 2-way tie (Michigan loses 2). In a three way tie overall record will eliminate Penn State since head2heads cancel each other out. In a two way tie Penn States win last night comes before all other tiebreakers.

Am I understanding that right?

Also, you thing an undefeated Baylor/WVU wouldn't get in? I find it hard to believe an undefeated P5 champ would ever be left out unless there were 5 of them.

I think we need to see vast improvement in several facets of the game before we want to consider Ohio State playing in the playoffs. I felt this way in 2014 after the VA Tech game and that season we did see that vast improvement.
