CFP to release rankings on Tuesdays

The first top 25 ranking from the College Football Playoff's selection committee will be released Tuesday, Oct. 28, sources told ESPN.com.

The selection committee then will release its weekly regular-season rankings each Tuesday night, sources said. It's still undecided whether the final ranking will be released late Saturday night, Dec. 6, after the conference championships are played or Sunday, Dec. 7, sources said.

Releasing the weekly rankings on Tuesday nights is a change from the BCS rankings, which were announced on Sunday nights.

Playoff officials discuss options

Commissioners at the College Football Playoff meetings have discussed going through mock exercises this week based on a template for the selection process and how the participants would be assigned to each game.

More details on how the committee will choose the four participants for the first College Football Playoff could be finalized and announced as early as Wednesday.

Not only must the selection committee establish a process to choose the top four teams, but it must also decide where (for example, this coming season, New Orleans or Los Angeles) each team should play.

In the past, it has been discussed that a team seeded 1 or 2 should not be placed at a significant geographical disadvantage -- against, for example, a No. 3- or 4-seeded LSU in New Orleans or a No. 3- or 4-seeded UCLA in Los Angeles.

The committee also will use its rankings to determine which teams should be placed in top-tier bowl spots not contracted by particular conferences.

How CFB Playoff teams will be chosen still a question for all

One of the big questions college football fans have about the new College Football Playoff is just how the selection committee will choose the top four teams in the country to compete for the national championship in the new four-team playoff model. That question will ultimately have to wait to be answered in December, but we now have a glimpse as to what those who drafted the criteria to be used had in mind.

The College Football Playoff released documents revealing how the CFB Management committee suggested the top four teams be selected. That committee is comprised of FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame athletics directorJack Swarbrick. As expected, strength of schedule and overall competition is tops on the list.

“Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and championships won must be specifically applied as tie-breakers between teams that look similar,” the document reads, according to USA Today. The sanctity of the regular season is preservedunder the guidelines outlined by the management committee, which was always one of the goals of limiting the playoff model to just four teams. Winning a conference championship will carry some weight but the management committee did point out there should be flexibility to allow for a non-conference champion to compete in the four-team playoff. For example, it looks as though Alabama would have been strongly considered for a playoff spot if this model was used last season.

This guy's comment hits the nail on the head: "Four of the top five conference champions is all I want to see."

The winner of the Commanders Cup is to be automatically entered into the play-offs unless that team is not Notre Dame. If Notre Dame is not the winner of the Commanders Cup, then the College of Cardinals will vote on the #5 team. Should Notre Dame not be ranked number 4 or higher, then in all instances the number four team has to play Notre Dame in Dublin with the winner advancing. Notre Dame will receive 1/2 of all payouts for all games except those in which Notre Dame participates in which case Notre Dame will share payouts on a 60/40 basis because we know the only reason 4/5ths of the TV audience is watching is to see Notre Dame.

First year of the playoff, first year we may get to see how committee handles injuries.

Obviously, the Buckeyes would prefer to win out and the schedule still favors that up until the matchup in East Lansing- nothing has really changed there, imo. But take a loss early, and with a couple early bye weeks, Braxton is able to return and guide the Buckeyes to wins the rest of the way- are they in? Or even a late loss to a 2-loss Sparty without Braxton, but he returns in mid-November to go undefeated and win the Big Ten Championship...in?

Maybe unlikely, but food for thought- though I'm sure I know most people's thoughts to those questions on this site.
