Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Right now they are 6 for 68 (8.8%) on the power play.

The NHL record worst PP for a full season is 9.35% from the 1997-98 Tampa Bay Lightning. That team only won 17 games in a full season and was last by a good margin. While I don't think the CBJ are actually this bad (they are scoring goals in other scenarios), this seems like more of a mental thing than a lack of skill or scoring talent.

Going back to this post...

Now this team can't score a damn thing at even strength, but the power play has "improved" to 13.5%....

Completely different team from what we saw in November/December.

The injury bug took them completely off the rails. They didn't have the depth to step up. Add to that, back in October/November/1st half of December, this team was a superior puck-control team. They have completely fallen off a cliff in that regard. They don't have an excess of scoring talent, so possessing the puck at a high rate is an absolute necessity.

For this team to succeed, they need a trade. I'm not sure a trade is in their best interest unless the price is right and what they get back isn't just a rental. This team is still really young at the foundation, so leveraging the future for 'right now' is a bad move (see Detroit, 2009-2013)....

Just weirdness going on...

CBJ battled back to tie it 2-2 and then David Savard takes a puck to the face and it bounces directly to a Caps player who of course doesn't miss the net...this team is done mentally. They can't score, even when they play good defense weird shit happens and they play good defense rarely enough. I don't think it's Torts, this team lacks true leadership.

Big test tonight in Toronto.

They beat the ever-loving shit out of the Isles last night. 50+ shots, 4 goals and only a few real opportunities for the Isles around the goal. Maybe missing Atkinson was bigger than we realized. The whole team does look a lot more energetic right now than they did even a week ago.

http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/Eastern/Metropolitan/Columbus.html

This team needs to get to 90 points to be close to a playoff spot. They currently have 62 points and the entire Metro division (all 8 teams) are within 12 points right now, which is insane.

February ends like this: @ Toronto, vs Philly, vs Shitzburgh, @ NJ, @ Philly, vs Shitcago, vs Washington.

Out of those 7 games, they need 10 points at minimum, more if possible and they absolutely have to beat Philly and New Jersey (figuring Washington and Pittsburgh are going to be in regardless)....the schedule in March eases up a little bit but February is going to make or break this team.

To recap the trades:

Letestu from Nashville for a 4th rd pick. ( :groove: )
Ian Cole from Ottawa for Moutrey and a 3rd rd pick in 2020 ( )
Some minor leaguer for another minor leaguer ( :so: )
Thomas Vanek for Jussi Jokkinen and Tyler Motte ( )

Basically Columbus announced it was a buyer without completely giving away the farm. Letestu already has paid dividends as has Cole. If Vanek gives them any boost on the Power Play that'll be great.

I don't think this is a Cup-contender, but they are easily top-8 in the East now if everyone plays their game.
