Columbus Blue Jackets sign G Elvis Merzlikins to five-year extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to a five-year, $27 million contract extension through the 2026-27 National Hockey League season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

Joonas Korpisalo is under contract for 2021/2022 for $2.8M; he will be an UFA for the 2022/2023 season. Apparently the Blue Jackets have decided that Elvis is their long term goalie. Elvis did have better stats than Joonas last season. In case of an injury to either Elvis or Joonas, I wonder who goalie #3 will be for the upcoming season.

I think it goes without saying, I’m very thankful we didn’t pay Bob $10m a year. Loved the years we got with him, but $10m a year for a goalie is just insane.

Wonder where Korpi goes? Can't imagine the Jackets keeping both now.

Carolina needs goaltending, they have some nice pieces. Edmonton was rumored to be interested in Korpi earlier this season too.
I’m not sure how viable EDM is, they’d have to unload Koskinen first. They definitely need help, though; Smith’s old as balls and Koskinen sucks.

Merzlikins' new contract keeps him at 'home' in Columbus

Goaltender sees a chance to keep getting better with an extension under his belt

When you think of everything Elvis Merzlikins has been through in Columbus, it's hard to believe it's been only two years since he arrived in the capital city.

He's had the highest of highs and lowest of lows on the ice, from the winless streak to start his career to finishing fifth in the Vezina Trophy voting as a rookie. That's been doubly true in his personal life, from getting married and witnessing the recent birth of his son, Knox, to living through the unspeakable tragedy this summer of the death of friend, teammate and countryman Matiss Kivlenieks.

Through it all, the constant has been Columbus, and each thing that has happened has further cemented he bond between the goaltender and the city.

It's become home for Merzlikins and his family, and it appears it will stay that way now that he signed a five-year, $27 million contract extension Tuesday that runs through the 2026-27 season.

"Quite honestly, it is awesome," he said Wednesday of signing that new deal. "I like the city. I like where I am. Columbus is the team who chose me in 2014 (in the draft). In my career, I've played on just a few teams -- quite honestly, as a professional, I've played on just two teams. I've never changed teams. When I played in Lugano, that was my home, that is my home in my heart and now Columbus is becoming my home.

"I'm really happy I'm still with the team who chose me in the draft and the team that has believed in me."

Even with the new contract, there is no guarantee Merzlikins will be the No. 1 goalie this upcoming season, Kekalainen said, with the playing time to be distributed as the coaching staff sees fit based on play on the ice.

Apparently Elvis played in the goal the 1st 2 periods and left with a 4-1 lead, it look likes the Blue Jackets put Jet Greaves in as goalie in the 3rd period and he didn't do real well.

Joonas Korpisalo Could be this Season's Top Rental Goaltender

The Columbus Blue Jackets signing goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to a five-year contract extension could spell the end of Joonas Korpisalo's tenure with the club. Brian Hedger of The Columbus Dispatch believes the 27-year-old Finnish netminder will either be traded this season or leave next summer as an unrestricted free agent.

Considered the successor to Sergei Bobrovsky following his departure to the Florida Panthers in 2019, Korpisalo wound up splitting the goaltending duties with Merzlikins. Both netminders slumped last season but Korpisalo won't get much opportunity to improve now that he's Merzlikins' understudy.

Nevertheless, playoff contenders seeking a goaltending upgrade could see Korpisalo as a viable rental option. Tuukka Rask and Devan Dubnyk are the only notables remaining in a thin free-agent market. Rask has indicated his preference to return to the Boston Bruins while Dubnyk struggled last season as a backup with the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche.

The pickings are also slim in the trade market. Last week, The Athletic's Eric Duhatschek included Korpisalo among his list of potential goalie trade candidates along with the Dallas Stars' Braden Holtby, the Detroit Red Wings' Thomas Greiss, Edmonton Oilers' Mikko Koskinen and the Los Angeles Kings' Jonathan Quick.

Yeah, if he hasn't been traded before, he'll get traded before the trade deadline (i.e. 21 Mar 2022) for prospects and/or draft choices, etc.

Going to the game tonight. First time in Nationwide for a long time. I'm looking forward to watching the young guys. Heard rumblings that Sillinger could make the team. Also think if Tarasov looks decent in the preseason, he could expedite the trade of Korpi.

  • In his first-ever game in a CBJ uniform, top goaltending prospect Daniil Tarasov stopped 25 of 26 shots on goal in the opening two periods of play before being replaced by Jean-Francois Berube.
  • Another point of intrigue was the play of Tarasov, who has long been the franchise's top goalie prospect. He was very good in the KHL last year before coming to Cleveland for a handful of games to start learning the North American game, but this was his first time putting on a CBJ sweater in a competitive game. It was an impressive start, and the thing that immediately stands out is his size, as Tarasov is listed as 6-foor-5 and looks every bit of it. That allows him to take up a lot of net and play a calm, composed game. It's not hard to see the tools are there as he gains more and more experience.

I legitimately think Yegor Chinakhov and Cole Sillinger both find roster spots for themselves on this team. There's no way you can deny Yegor a spot after the start to the pre-season he's had scoring the puck. He could be an absolutely huge piece when it comes to the PP. Sillinger has done everything you could possibly ask for in a rookie. Still think this team will struggle overall, but I also think they'll be better than some people are expecting them to finish.

I was really impressed with Sillinger. Was fine in the defensive zone. I saw him keeping track of his guys, he was willing to go to the slot and move guys out, too. He didn't look out of place in the offensive zone, but that aspect will improve with time. Looks like he's going to be a good pick. I kind of expected that he would end up at wing, but I don't feel that way anymore.

Chinakhov was quiet, but I did see him point out to Laine that Laine was letting his guy roam around the defensive zone. Chinakhov actually had a really nice takeaway early in the game too. Good signs from him, I expected him to be lost in the D zone, but he was ok.

Laine is so boom or bust. There were entire shifts out there that the fastest he skated was when he was getting off the ice. Then he'll rip a shot and you realize this guy is on your team to shoot. That's it. Let him shoot. Put him in the offensive zone whenever possible, keep him out of the D zone. Tell him to go to the circle and do everything you can to get the puck to him there. He's smart enough to pass if that's the right play (see Boone's PP goal) and he has the second best slapper in the world.

Tarasov looked good, but his puck-handling skills were bad. On two occasions he played the puck and the Blues got scoring chances.

Was cool to see Jake out there again. You can tell he's going to be the primary driver of offense.

I really liked the Jackets willingness to stretch the Blues' defense. It really caught them off-guard more than it should have, but I'm glad to see the Jackets pushing the puck down the ice.

I didn't notice Boqvist much, but that's not a bad thing for a defender.

#52 for the Blues (Tommy Cross) should have gotten the #1 star of the game for the Jackets. He was fucking awful! I'm pretty sure he was on the ice for every goal against the Blues (maybe not the empty-netter).

Chinakhov's 'lethal' shot already making people take notice

Yegor Chinakhov smiled when he heard the question -- a little bit in English first and then a lot more when it was repeated in Russian.

But it's something Blue Jackets fans want to know. Just how did the 20-year-old Russian forward create a shot that already is flummoxing NHL goaltenders, one that has his teammates and coaches in awe and fans ready to embrace someone who could be the next great scorer in CBJ history?

But when asked about that shot Wednesday night, Chinakhov smiled and put his head down a bit.

"Nothing special," he said through interpreter Anton Poltyrev.

Sorry, Yegor. Just about everyone else would beg to differ, starting with Chinakhov's boss. CBJ head coach Brad Larsen has been in the game at the highest level for more than two decades as a player and a coach, and he's seen plenty of players who could score with the best in the world.

And when discussing the way Chinakhov has made goalies look helpless so far in his first few North American games, Larsen has a name come to mind. And it's a doozy.

"It's a lethal shot," Larsen said. "I know (Chinakhov's coach with Avangard Omsk in Russia) Bob Hartley very well, so I talked to him over the summer, and he was adamant he has a really good release. He actually compared it to a Joe Sakic type, which if any of you guys have seen Joe Sakic, you don't throw that out without putting a lot of thought into it.

"And I saw it. He can shoot the puck. He can put a little bit of fear into some goalies, for sure."

Laine wants to be better in first full season with Columbus

Star sniper is energized going into the season

cut.jpg

The thing about Patrik Laine is that you know he's always going to be blunt.

So when he says he doesn't have much to prove, having already put together seasons pretty much every other forward in the NHL would dream to have, he's right.

But when he also says this past season with the Blue Jackets wasn't what he wanted, it's hard to argue that as well.

"I don't think I need to prove anything anymore," Laine said Thursday after the first on-ice day of CBJ training camp, presented by OhioHealth. "I think I proved already what I can do in this league. Scoring over 40, that's not an everyday thing for a lot of guys in this league. I've done that already, but I don't think I'm in that position anymore where I have to prove anything to anybody.

"But I still want to be better. It doesn't matter if I scored 70 last year ... I just want to be a better player than I was the last year. It's gonna be pretty easy this year because I was pretty (crap) last year, but I just try to kind of build on last year and try to be better and have fun this season."
