EL PASO, Texas -- The Chihuahuas were looking to show off their city and ballpark at the Triple-A All-Star Game at Southwest University Park, but with power at the plate and dazzling defense on the diamond, Ty France and Luis Urias made sure the Padres prospects got their share of the spotlight as the Pacific Coast League beat the International League for the third year in a row, 9-3.

France and Urias homered to send the crowd of 9,706 into a frenzy, while the PCL pitchers, led by Memphis right-hander Jake Woodford, put to rest any idea that every day is Home Run Derby in their park. France, who was named BUSH's Beans Top Star for the PCL, immediately made an impact defensively, knocking down a sharp grounder to third by Kyle Higashioka in the first inning...............

The IL finally manufactured a run in the fifth when Fresno's Dakota Bacus walked Gwinnett's Travis Demeritte, who took third on a single by Charlotte's Ryan Goins. Bacus got Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Ryan McBroom to ground into a double play that scored Demeritte. An inning later, Tigers No. 7 prospect Willi Castro singled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Indians No. 29 prospect Eric Haase.

Haase picked up another RBI in the eighth with a single off Reno's Jimmie Sherfy and took home the Top Star Award for the IL.

"It's fun just to come out here and be with the guys," the Columbus catcher said. "All those guys earned it and it was great. Not really a game plan, just go out and see what everybody can bring to the table and it's fun again. Playing baseball's fun."

Sometimes the best way to handle a challenging situation is the less-is-more approach. Count Daniel Johnson among those who subscribe to that theory.

Cleveland's No. 16 prospect doubled, singled and drove in two runs as Triple-A Columbus defeated Gwinnett, 7-3, in Game 2 of the International League Governors' Cup semifinals on Thursday night at Coolray Park.

The Clippers lead the best-of-5 series, 2-0, and can advance to their first Finals appearance since 2015 with one more win. Johnson knows that last victory can often be the hardest to get, but he has no doubt his team will come out ready to play.

"It's another game. At least that's the way we're looking at it," he said. "We're not going to do too much and play the game the way we always do. As long as everyone keeps doing what they're doing and playing hard, we should be fine. Let's just go get that win."

After going 0-4 in the opener, Johnson provided a pair of key hits for Columbus, which ended the regular season with five straight wins and a league-best 81-59 mark. The 24-year-old flied out in his first at-bat, but drove in his club's first run with a single to left field before scoring on Dioner Navarro's three-run homer later in the fourth.

"You have games when you take an 0-fer and others where you have four hits," Johnson said. "It's the name of the game. Even though it's the playoffs, I'm not trying to do anything differently. Your mind-set might change slightly, but you still go out and play the same game. I don't want to change anything. I tried to keep the same approach and it worked out."

Bradley's homer leads Columbus to 8-3 win over Durham
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Bobby Bradley hit a three-run home run in the first inning, leading the Columbus Clippers to an 8-3 win over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday.

The home run by Bradley scored Ka'ai Tom and Bradley Zimmer to give the Clippers a 3-0 lead.

The Bulls cut into the deficit in the fourth inning when Kevin Padlo and Dalton Kelly hit back-to-back home runs.

The Clippers later added four runs in the fourth and one in the eighth. In the fourth, Tom hit a three-run home run and Andrew Velazquez hit a solo home run, while Zimmer hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Connor Marabell in the eighth.

Columbus right-hander Michael Peoples (12-6) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing three runs on nine hits over six innings. Opposing starter Jose De Leon (3-2) took the loss in the International League game after a rough outing in which he allowed seven runs and six hits over three innings.

Padlo homered and singled twice for the Bulls. Kelly homered and singled twice.

Clippers claim 11th Governors' Cup
Zimmer, Johnson, Tom homer to finish three-game sweep

DURHAM, N.C. -- One powerful swing was another example of Bradley Zimmer looking more and more like a big leaguer again.

The Indians outfielder -- more than a year removed from shoulder surgery -- hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning as Columbus captured its 11th Governors' Cup by completing a three-game sweep of Durham with a 6-2 victory on Thursday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

"Big situation, I was ready and I wanted it," Zimmer said. "I got that one."

The Clippers broke a tie with Rochester for the most International League championships and became the second team to win four Governors' Cups in the same decade, denying the two-time defending champion Bulls a chance at that distinction. Columbus last won in 2015.

Zimmer has progressed through three Minor League levels during the past month while rehabbing. His homer came on a full count against reliever Aaron Slegers (0-1) and hit right above the 395-foot marker in straightaway center field. It was his first long ball in seven postseason games.

"That was the old him right there," Clippers manager Tony Mansolino said. "That's the first time we've seen catch up to a fastball like that."

Zimmer had surgery on his right shoulder in July 2018.

"It has been a long year," he said. "[Winning a title] is fun, no matter what. Hopefully, I can go back up [to the Majors], take this winning momentum up there."

The Clippers had the best record in the IL this season and kept rolling in the playoffs by winning six of seven games. The run came amid significant roster upheaval.

"Good players," Mansolino said. "If you're going to have that many players come in and out, you've got to have good players to do this."

Winning the Cup was the best possible outcome for Columbus shortstop Andrew Velazquez, who began the season with Durham.

"I got one of those [with the Bulls from last year]," he said of a championship ring. "I want one of these."

Columbus starter Mitch Talbot walked the bases loaded in the second inning, but left fielder Ka'ai Tom made a diving catch to rob IL batting champion Jake Cronenworth of a hit to end the threat.

Tom went 2-for-4 with his third homer in four games and was named playoff MVP.

"You go out every day to do your best and to contribute," he said, noting it's his first postseason individual award.

Talbot, a 35-year-old right-hander who began the season in independent ball, allowed one run despite issuing seven walks and giving up two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He pitched for the Bulls from 2007-09.

Durham grabbed its first lead of the series on Kevin Padlo's two-out RBI single in the third.

After Zimmer's shot, Daniel Johnson led off the seventh with his first playoff homer to stretch the lead to 4-1. Tom cranked an opposite-field two-run blast over the left-field wall later in the inning.

  • Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell made another rehab start for the Bulls and retired all six batters he faced, striking out three. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on July 29.

Slegers, whose late-season work helped Durham reach the playoffs, gave up homers on three of the seven hits he allowed over 4 2/3 innings.

"He was our best pitcher down the stretch and he earned the right to be out there," first-year Bulls manager Brady Williams said. "The three-run homers are what did us in this series. They hit them and we didn't."

Jason Coats belted his fourth postseason homer leading off the bottom of the seventh for the Bulls, who stranded 14 runners. They loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Jon Edwards came on and struck out Coats.
