TOM DODGE Dispatch
Clippers general manager Ken Schnacke, left, and Eugene Mayer, a former Scott's Lawn and Garden employee who has consulted on the installation of turf in athletic facilities all over the country, display a chunk a sod being laid in Huntington Park.

A touch of color with a New Jersey accent began taking root yesterday in Huntington Park.
Workers rolled out the first of the 90,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass that will cover the infield and outfield portions of the new home for the Columbus Clippers next season.
The sod arrived on trucks from a turf farm in Tuckahoe, N.J., in 1,500-pound, 30-foot-long rolls in the early morning. Eugene Mayer, a consultant to the Clippers for field installation and maintenance, lifted the edge of one strip to show the root system.

Should they be planting grass in this weather? My grass hasn't grown much in the last couple of weeks.
In reading the article, this side already had about 2 inches of root showing and the guy who was laying it said this was the best time of year to lay sod because of the cool nights and warm days. I have had sod late twice and will never do it again because it never roots. I would rather do a straight seed or have my yard hydro-seeded before I would ever have it sodded again.

Torey Lovullo, a member of International League championship teams in Columbus in 1991 and '92, is returning as the manager. The '92 team won a franchise-record 95 games behind a roster that included Bernie Williams, J.T. Snow, Bob Wickman, Dave Silvesstri, Sam Militello, Hensley Muelins, Gerald Williams and Russ Springer.

Rodriguez powers Clippers into Finals

Former second-round pick busts out of slump with key homer

Josh Rodriguez entered Game 4 of the International League semifinals with an 0-for-9 postseason collar. It didn't take him long to shake it off.
Rodriguez doubled and scored in the third inning, then hit a three-run homer to spark a seven-run fourth that sent the Columbus Clippers on the way to an 11-5 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and a spot in the Governors' Cup Finals.

Columbus, which won four straight titles from 1967-70 and three in a row from 1979-81, has not captured the Governors' Cup since 1996. The Clippers will face Durham or Louisville in the best-of-5 Championship Series.
