Pat Sperduto coached two Nashville Kats teams to the ArenaBowl.

Pat Sperduto will be named the Columbus Destroyers coach today, The Dispatch has learned.
Sperduto will be introduced at an afternoon news conference in Nationwide Arena.
Sperduto last coached the Nashville Kats, which folded after the 2007 Arena Football League season.
Sperduto had two coaching tenures with the Kats. He coached them from 1999 to 2001, leading Nashville to the ArenaBowl in 2000 and 2001. The Kats lost both championship games.
That Kats team moved to Georgia and became the Force. Sperduto took over the new Kats team that began play in 2005.

Pat Sperduto says the play of the offensive and defensive lines will be key to the Destroyers' success.

The new Destroyers coach isn't one for a lot of gray areas.
You buy in or you get out. You work hard. You don't make excuses.
"I grew up in the big city, but I'm a blue-collar guy," said Pat Sperduto, introduced yesterday as Destroyers coach. "I just think hard work will always pay off, and I think that's the (attitude) of 95 percent of the people of Columbus, Ohio."
Sperduto, a Boston native, has worked in Nashville, Tenn., since 1997 for either -- and sometimes both -- the NFL's Tennessee Titans and the Arena Football League's Nashville Kats, who folded after the 2007 season.
Destroyers partner, general manager and president Jim Renacci has known Sperduto for five years. After Columbus stumbled to a 3-13 record following last year's ArenaBowl appearance and coach Doug Kay was not retained, Renacci had Sperduto at the top of his list.

Don't be surprised if the Destroyers use the top pick in the dispersal draft of former players of the now-defunct New Orleans Voodoo to address a weakness at linebacker. Of the 17 players the Arena Football League team had under contract when it went out of business last month, linebacker Norman Lejeune could be the best available.

Arena football: Uncertainty envelops Destroyers
Players hear league's future is in jeopardy
Saturday, December 6, 2008 6:44 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Speculation exceeds facts for now, but indications are that the Arena Football League is approaching the biggest crossroads in its 21-year history.
Two players told The Dispatch last night they'd received text messages warning that the league could soon fold. They also had heard that it might take a one-year hiatus or compete in 2009 with fewer teams.
"We're supposed to find out sometime (last night) whether we're even going to have a league anymore," said Michael Landry, a free agent who played for the Destroyers last season. "From what I know, the league's in trouble."
Others said they'd heard nothing beyond pessimistic rumors.
"I've heard it, but I hear that every year," Destroyers receiver Derek Lee said. "I hear it's a little more serious this year than in previous years. I'm worried, but I can't let it take over. I just have to hope for the best."

Reports: AFL will cease operations

The Arena Football League soon will announce that it is folding, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
A league source told ESPN that the AFL is "suspending operations indefinitely," and an official announcement was forthcoming.
Arizona Rattlers owner Brett Bouchy said the league will also declare bankruptcy, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
"It's just unfortunate we're in this situation," Bouchy said, according to the newspaper. "Everyone knows myself and Arizona fought hard to avoid this day. The league was divided into two groups and factions. You had one group of committed owners who contributed capital and willing to do whatever it took to bring the league back in 2010. I have been in that group the entire time. Then there was another group that just wasn't willing to make the investment. We could never get a consensus."
Tampa Bay Storm owner Jim Borghesi posted a message on his Facebook page, saying: "The AFL will be having a press conference to announce that the league will not be returning," according to the Albany Times-Union.

But Columbus Destroyers managing partner Jim Renacci, who was in charge of coming up with the adjusted financial plan, told the Columbus Dispatch that despite efforts in the past six to nine months, and with the economy still in a recession, the requisite 75 percent of owners could not agree on the plan.
