Where would smokers venture to to smoke in establishments, Zanesville?[/QUOTE]
No they won't go to Zanesville, they will go to Hilliard, Dublin, Gahanna, Westerville, Worthington, etc. It will kill lots of the downtown, and on top of that, the Columbus police have said they wont be able to enforce the laws anyway, that they will have to depend on fellow citizens to enforce the laws

I smoke, but I don't smoke in my own home, or while I am eating at a restaurant-I don't want smoke around me then. That said, if smoking is banned in bars, I would go fucking postal. When you enter a bar or bowling alley-that is a smoker's realm. At any given bar-especially smaller, neighborhood type places, probably 70% of the patrons are smoking. If a tavern owner decides it is beneficial to his revenue stream to ban smoking-guess what-he will. Otherwise, leave the poor guy alone. Also, in the restaurant industry, the vast majority of people employed as servers, bartenders, cooks, etc. seem to smoke. So spare me the "work environment" excuse.

Interestingly, my local news station is doing a story on this as I type here. Jacksonville banned smoking a year ago this month, and the local CBS station has done a big study on it. They revisited business owners who fought the ban under the premise that it would hurt their bottom line, and it turned out that business actually increased after the ban. Revenue and patronage is up city wide, and that's attributed increased patronage from people who had been avoiding restaurants because of smoke exposure. More families with greater frequency.

Just thought it was an interesting contrast. I remember when they first enacted the ban here there was a massive uproar about lost biz.

The obvious caveat here is that you can't trust the media (particularly local media) to be scientific about anything.

Clarity,

I seriously doubt that if the "bars" and "clubs" were checked that business would be up. I tended for about a decade, and it is my opinion that Oh8ch is right. Roughly 70 to 80 percent of the patronage smokes, as well as most of the tenders/waitstaff that I have ever seen.

Clarity,

I believe that ban is state-wide at all establishments that derive 10% or more of their income from food. The non-food, or less than 10% places have the right to still smoke. There's a place down here in Boynton Beach, that is not the greatest place by any means, but more a of a joke to attend, that still allows smoking inside. It's just about a mullet's paradise, but it's the only place I know of around here that still allows smoking. I remember voting on it way back when in November of 02 when we voted for Governor. I was against it then, but I really don't mind the law now, as my clothes do smell a lot better and when I've been drinking and like to smoke I can just stumble outside.

Smoking should be banned because....

Let's be clear. Smoking is a dangerous and self-destructive habit. Various poisons contained within tobacco smoke cause or contribute to cancer of the mouth and lungs, heart problems, emphysema, gum disease and a variety of other physical diseases. Life Insurance companies recognize the disease causing properties of tobacco smoke by charging higher rates to customers who smoke. Smoking stains teeth, and makes people smell bad. It is an expensive habit as well.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans today; with heart attack is its most visible sign. <o:p></o:p>

Healthy lifestyles play a big part in reducing your risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Better lifestyle habits can help you to reduce your risk for heart attack. You have to learn what you can do to help prevent heart disease and stroke. If you have more than one risk factor for heart disease or stroke, you could and should make lifestyle choices that can reduce your risk. <o:p></o:p>

Smoking <o:p></o:p>

Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1:place>United States</st1:place></st1:country-region> . That’s important! Want evidence of the dangers of smoking? Consider these statistics: A smoker’s risk of heart attack is more than twice that of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking is the biggest risk factor for sudden cardiac death -- smokers are looking at two to four times the risk of nonsmokers. Studies have shown that cigarette smoking is also an important risk factor for stroke. The evidence also indicates that chronic exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke, passive smoking) may increase the risk of heart disease.

I was in a food/beverage establishment the week prior to Christmas on the NE side of Cols and was told of a loophole for the smoking ban. If they make the restuarant "private", then they can apply their own rules. They are talkinga bout using cards like we use at CVS, Kroger, etc. and charging a dollar to enter each time. Find it very resourceful.

Hate smelling like an ashtray but love the smell of cigars.

it won't be quite that easy but there will be a few who try the dollar entry thing. If that were the case all of the night clubs would be excluded (and as far as I know they aren't). They would have to charge a monthly membership fee similar to that of a Moose lodge to be considered private

i think it's BS. it should be up the OWNERS! amazing that hte republicans are in charge but govmt keeps getting bigger. i think that in warm climates, fine, make me go outside to smoke, but not when you have to freeze your titties off outside ..esp if you're in some sweaty club and when you go outside it's that much colder b/c you're sweating.

plus it's gonna cause some double standards where some people are gonna get away with smoking inside while others get popped and ticketed for it. any of you guys ever see anyone smoking in new york these days? i have..alot..and they've had this ban thing going for a long time now....

I'm okay with smoking in bars or bowling alleys, but the movement to eliminate smoking in restaurants I think is a good thing. Non smoking sections are a joke and I really believe most smokers could go an hour or two without a smoke while eating.
The law passed in Columbus specifically eliminates smoking in anything except private clubs. Frankly, that's the problem with this whole thing.
2/3rds to 3/4 of the adult population don't smoke. Therefore at the time this was voted 2/3rd to 3/4 of the decision makers didn't have to think too hard about what saying no might mean. That means now that 1/3rd to 1/4 of the adult population, if they wish to have a stogie with a shot, must go somewhere other than a public bar in Cowtown.

What a nation of pussy-whipped politically correct nancy boys we have become.
Without tobacco and without hard liquor this nation wouldn't have had an economic leg on which to stand at the time of its birth.
The government doesn't need to eliminate smoking in bars fer crissakes. You might as well pass a law against blow-jobs in a fucking brothel.
