"Community" / Parks & Recreation

So. I'm thoroughly enjoying this season of Community. The last 2 felt like work. Although there were some pretty great episodes/moments, nothing felt as whole as season 6 has felt thus far. Good for Yahoo for being on top of picking this up.

I would love to see Yahoo keep running with it. With Donald Glover and Chevy Chase gone, I think it is pretty clear that with Dan Harmon writing and the nucleus of actors they have, it could be this good for awhile imo. The remaining cast (Alison Brie, Joel McHale, Ken Jeong, Dani Pudi, etc.) are not likely to get some permanent gig that would preclude them from continuing with Community in my eyes. I thought this would be a nice final season but I am so thrilled with it, I don't want it to end. And I think they are leaving that possibility open with the constant "Nobody actually ever graduates from Greendale" lines. And if they don't, I will let Chang have the final word:

Cycling back to the first episode again of Parks & Rec.

This show changed so much from those early beginnings, which were an Office style spinoff with much less developed characters. Leslie is a completely different character, as is Tom (who is a nerdy, not funny version of Jim Haulpert). The avalanche of hilarious supporting characters are yet to be developed and one of the go to guys (Mark) is canned after a season (thank goodness, his replacements are awesome and not wet blankets).

My friend finally got on board with this show. He talked about how much he didn't like it early on and now he absolutely loves it. Stick with it guys, it gets epic.

I gave up part way through the first season because I couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll give it another shot when I'm ready to start something new.

I had forgotten how badly it tried to be the office early on (and I've already rewatched the show at least once). It's nothing like that later.

So when does Parks and Recreation become funny?
Initially it does try to be the office but by season 2 it finds it's own groove. It's a sitcom so watching episodes out of order isn't a huge deal. I'd recommend watching a single season 2 or 3 episode and seeing if you like that then use that to make your decision if you should stick with the show or jump ship.

Coming from a huge fan of the show, season 1 was pretty bad. The show really hits its stride in season 2 so keep watching.
This, season 1 is widely considered by fans to be mediocre at best. Your comment about it trying too hard to be The Office is spot on. It gets much better quickly.
1x06 has flashes of it. 2x02 The Stakeout is in my opinion the first truly great episode. Season 2 ebbs and flows with quality I think, but from season 3 onward it is consistently great.
When does Parks and Rec get good?
Season 2. I almost gave up on it during season 1 as well, until people told me it drastically changed direction after that.

Stick with it. It will get good.
Season 2. After that it's pretty much smooth sailings of hilarity.

And lol at people who never watched the show trashing it. Get out of here.
It really hits its stride around the introduction of Rob Lowe and Adam Scott at the end of season two... although much of season two is good.
Most of the NBC comedies started out so strong that it made this one look like one of those sure to be cancelled series, but it really gets good.

I agree with what's been said previously. S1 was pretty meh and I was ready to give up on it as well. I don't remember why I gave it a second chance in S1 but it was a night and day difference that ended up keeping me until the end of the series.

Didn't realize S1 was only 6 episodes. I probably watched 3-4 of them during it's initial run before bailing. I can power through that. I'm one of those people that feels they need to watch the whole thing, if I can.

I am one of the weird ones that actually enjoyed S1. Granted that S2 and on were markedly better, I just thought S1 was a little awkward as the characters developed but with some funny moments. But I think it is nearly a unanimous consensus that it gets way better after S1.

Dear goodness, anyone who has never watched parks, please avoid season 1. I'm not sure I recognize a single character in this second episode other than the comically awful citizens at town hall meetings (which are nowhere near the level they reach later ) . Ron in particular is so different that he'd be ashamed of him.

This is a completely different show. Even jerry is competent :shake:
