I have 40, 80, and 160 GB hard drives. I just got the 160 when I got a DVD burner last week. It's coming in handy, but I doubt I'll every use it all up.
Whenever I start to have Windows problems I just reformat the 40 and start over. I like to keep everything Windows related on the 40 and use the other 2 for everything else.

The only problem I have with reformatting so much, like I used to do, is that the real computer tech stuff happens when you can keep the computer running well without formatting.

That's how you get good, when you can make your system run well again, without formatting the system.

I get enough practice with that at my job :)

Actually XP runs rather well, for a long period of time, if you dont install 3094039403904304 programs and fubar it, or get a bunch of virii and spyware. Keeping win98 running smooth, now THAT was a challenge :)

The real challenge is to get WinME to run good, EVER.. haha...

I've got 2 120 hard drives. Will repair, formatting and all these other things fry my hard drive?
No.

Win ME is flawed when ou first install it, so that's never gonna happen. Do you realize what Microsoft did there? They had Win2k coming out, to replace NT 4.......they thought "hey wait a minute, we need to release something to bleed the general public dry as well". So they took Win2k, ripped about 30-40% of it out, and threw it on the shelf, calling it Windows ME. Kinda funny :)

Yeah.. that was the off years.. what they did was almost keep me from getting WindowsXP..

I went from Win98 SE to Windows 2000.. when ME came out I installed it and quickly uninstalled it for 2000... almost didn't install XP when it came out..

I've ran some Longhorn Alphas... I really like the feel of it.. kind of unstable though(what else do you expect from an alpha release though)..

As others have stated, it could be any number of things, from hardware related (insufficient power supply, bad memory stick, etc.) to software.

You got two 120-gig drives. Back up all your data/music/movies/pictures, as well as a list of installed programs, onto the secondary disk. Boot to the XP CD, format the C partition, and reinstall XP fresh.

I do this for a living, trust me. Even if you think you know what the problem is and look like you fixed it, chances are it's actually more than a couple things acting together to FUBAR your system. A fresh install of XP will at least tell you whether the problem is related to software or faulty hardware. If I had to bet, I'd say it's probably software-related.

well.. you could just reinstall XP overtop of the old installation... that will effectively replace the registry.. and should do the trick without having to do all the other crap..

sometimes though, that doesn't quite work well.
