Could Someone Go Julius Caesar / Augustus on the USA Today?

There were a few times the Rome podcast got in to their currency problems. I think there was a whole episode on it if I remember correctly.. There was some comment where their coins earlier on had over 70% silver but by the end it was barely 1% or something like that. Amazing that they never really did understand the connection that both creating way too many coins and not regulating the proportions had to their inflation issues.

Interesting stuff, thanks

absolutely true, I think they only recently proved that happened as well. it shows the financial trouble the empire was in as well as the disturbing amount of skill and craftsmanship their coin makers had. they were replacing the silver with less valuable metals then covering them with silver. which, to my knowledge, requires the use of electricity so.... it really is interesting stuff.

If you want a true doomsday scenario, what if some day in the near future parts of the United States finally start pulling away from each other politically - and more than just a north/south split but a regional split where they all don't want anything to do with one another - some parts will have an inordinate amount of power compared to others when you look at populations and all that.

you are correct, weak political leadership in Washington and strong (yet very foolish) leadership in the states is the most likely scenario. *looks around the political arena* so.... this should start happening next week then? :p

I need to hear your pussy platform before we go rushing into these sorts of things.

can't speak for anyone else, but my platform is as thus: pussy has at least half the money and all the pussy currently. this puts the rest of us at a distinct disadvantage. removing their half of the money would move things closer towards gender equality. this would be the first step.

It's scary to think, China could also very easily invade from the north, through Canada. It's been discussed.

not without Russian assistance. could they physically do this assuming there was no resistance from any other nation? physically they could achieve it, yes. and while it is true china has been aggressively modernizing. even if Russia turned a blind eye to their movements, the coordination of maritime and ground forces for a movement on a scale that could actually have any real impact militarily once they got here would be ridiculously visible to anyone not in a coma. they might as well just hold up a flag that said, "we're going to invade you in like a week, this is the route we will be taking. would you like to shoot us now or wait till later?". not to mention most of china's military is still poorly trained and equipped even with the modernization going on. without direct Russian involvement (and depending on season) they would either take weeks to get significant forces to the us mainland or take serious casualties just to weather alone. I would consider this physically plausible, but militarily impractical given their current state of readiness for long range large scale military action.

It's hard to control ocean trade when you have no Navy.

yep, I was kind of disappointed (not surprised) that Obama said no to texas when they proposed succeeding from the union. if I were pres I would have granted their request. I then would have prepared all us military forces to depart immediately and shut down all federal funding. I then would have sent them an estimate for all gov. based services from aide to funding/programs to security. I figure a 50% up front deposit and first months payment at the signing of said agreement would suffice....
