Cultural identity of the Big 10 - few penalties

Coqui

Legend
After our performance against Ohio U. where we did not commit a single penalty, I was curious where we were in regards to NCAA rankings for least amount of penalties. So I looked it up. To my amazement, here are the top 10 teams in terms of least amount of penalties:

Code:
Rank Team Gms Pen. YrdsPen PenPG YPG W L T
1 Penn St. 3 7 45 2.33 15.00 2 1 0
1 E. Mich. 3 7 65 2.33 21.67 0 3 0
3 La.-Laf. 2 6 37 3.00 18.50 1 1 0
3 Ohio St. 3 9 72 3.00 24.00 3 0 0
3 Indiana 2 6 60 3.00 30.00 2 0 0
6 Wisc. 3 10 85 3.33 28.33 3 0 0
6 Miss St. 3 10 95 3.33 31.67 1 2 0
6 Col St. 3 10 99 3.33 33.00 0 3 0
9 Buffalo 3 11 85 3.67 28.33 1 2 0
9 Iowa 3 11 90 3.67 30.00 2 1 0

With scUM and Minnesota in the wings for the top 20 (scUM ranking at 11, and Minnesota at 15)

Now normally, a team that isn't good has to be disciplined enough to have a chance of winning. But if you notice on the chart, the only teams with winning records ranked in the top 10 are all Big10 teams.

According to last year's stats, Penn St. is the only one that was consistent in penalties. Is this something that's becoming a transitional identity of the conference?

[Random Internet SEC Fan]The players are all so slow that the officials fall asleep before there's time for a penalty to occur. Just you wait until an SEC team plays against one of those corn-fed Big Ten teams and the flags will be coming from all over as the Big Ten tries hanging from the jerseys of the lightning-fast SEC defensive linemen.[/Random Internet SEC Fan]

Funny. I have not seen seen much swagger from UMiami fans since the game.

In all honesty, all of the UMiami fans I know have said that Ohio State is just that freakin' good. Have yet to hear an excuse about this year's game. Kudos to the Thuggalos that I know. Actually, a few of them are rooting for Ohio State the rest of the year (for their SOS i would believe, but hey, makes my life easier at the work.)

All you have to do is type Ohio State vs. Miami in youtube and you'll get plenty of it in the comments section.

If you actually read my post, I was referring to the fans I personally know, not the 3 idiots on the internet that think UMiami is !ZOMG THE BEST EVAH!!!

Given that most of the B11's games to date have been home games officiated by B11 refs, I think not; our refs appear to have been told to keep their hankies clean in the pre-conference tilts.

Viewing our O-line play and D-back play, I can tell you that we're not particularly clean in the holding or PI areas. (Not saying we're bad in those either, just that they are judgment calls that appear to not be called in our pre-conference games with as much frequency as usual.)

I think there is probably some of that going on. But I also think it takes a little while for the zebras to get the game speed down as well. Sometimes it isn't malicious.

I agree that there have been some calls I've seen pictures of where they should have been called.

However the refs are of the away teams conference. There is no home cooking. The same ACC refs that blasted Miami for 8 penalties, only gave us 2 penalties (within the first half of the first quarter only)
