Dallas Cowboys (Official Thread)

After years of baffling drafts the Cowboys nailed it last year and I have to say I'm pleased with the results (on paper) this weekend. Having to replace the entire starting secondary is no small task, but on the other hand it wasn't a great group. Lots of youth back there now, and inexperience, but it seems Jerry has learned to let his people have more of a say in the draft process and it's working.

Drafting has never been a problem for Jerruh. It's his handling of coaches, front office management, and holding on to key players who become free agents where things go south.

Drafting has never been a problem? The 2009 draft was possibly the worst in NFL history for a team that actually had their allotment of picks, not to mention other gaffes over the years that were a big part of the early 2000s decline (Quincy Carter comes to mind). In recent seasons they've gotten better as the torch is slowly being passed to his son, who had to talk Jerry out of taking Johnny Manziel, and relying more on the scouting department than Jerry's intuition.

He also drafted guys like Demarcus Ware and Roy Williams during that "early 2000s decline". Other guys he has since drafted include Demarco Murray, Zeke Elliott, Dak Prescott, Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, etc.

IMO, the Cowboys have drafted the best when there was a strong counterweight to Jerry Jones. First it was Jimmy Johnson, then Bill Parcells. Now it is the rest of the group with player personnel responsibility: Jason Garrett, Will McClay and Stephen Jones. They have much more influence now and the Cowboys are better for it.

The other change that has made a huge difference is making the team younger. With the exception of a few positions (or a special player), the Cowboys are not signing 30+ year old players to multi-year contracts. The NFL is a young mans game.

I am going to watch todays game with interest to see how Zeke and Dak play and what the play calls look like. My sense based on the first couple of games is that there is a divide on this team as to who the playmaker is...

There are those moments when you think..."Only the Browns." Well, in the 21st century, there are other moments where you think..."Only the Cowboys."

At least it didn't cost them the game.
