Danny Carey, greatest drummer on the Planet

As for modern day Peart? It's gotta be Portnoy, and the modern day Rush is (and for my money, has been for a dozen years now) Dream Theater. Dream Theater has (17) 10 minute+ songs... beautiful musical arrangments... they're the most hardworking and technically perfect band I've ever seen. They're never 'taking time off', they're always touring, Dream Theater's popularity is sorta picking up here in the USA, too.
Soul... If you know who Dream Theater toured the U.S. with this last fall, then you know who my favorite band is. I would have loved to have seen them together, as they got rave reviews from fans of both bands who came to see the show. DT even did a cover of "Machine Messiah" during their show as a tribute...

i am unashamedly a tool homer so dany has my vote.. but i am TERRIBLY biased..
hehe, me too, and since i am not technical i can't compare on the same level as some of these guys, not to mention there is no other band on the planet i've spent even .001% of the time listening to than i have TooL, so i guess i'm just a bit biased, that's why i was curious about other opinions...............i'm surprised this thread took off like it did, wow.........i'm surprised no comments on the drum set, am i the only one that's blown away by that?

and i've really gotta start listening to dream theatre, i've heard so much about them for such a long time........i've listened to bits of their stuff online but never really took a hold of me, i guess i need to put more time into hearing their stuff

Yes. They were AWESOME. Rick Wakeman? A God. Steve Howe? A God.

Not one of DT's best nights in Chicago... 60$/ticket... ouch.

I missed this thread before, but I would agree that Carey is one of the best around. The Grudge is some of this best work. My other favorites are Dave Grohl, Buddy Miles (Band of Gypsys), Chad Smith (RHCP), and Marcus Randolph (Robert Randolph and the Family Band).

Have been listening to Brain Salad Surgery the last day or two and remembered this thread ... so I had to resurrect it.

Not one mention of Carl Palmer? Seriously?!?!

There's usually not a lot of love for prog rock. Listening to that on vinyl by any chance?
Rhino remaster.

I'd like to get a vinyl mp3 rip of old ELP stuff. I've got a good collection of Beatles and Jethro Tull mp3s that are 320CBR vinyl rips and they sound spectacular.

John Dolmayan the drummer for System of a Down is great

I worked main stage security at the 2002 KROQ Weinie Roast (HUGE music festival in LA) when I was a Marine to raise money for the ball. Dolmayan jumped off the stage (I didn't see him do it) but when he tried to come back through our barrier, we thought he was just a fan trying to rush the stage, after a couple seconds of us stopping him, a giant hand (belonging to SOAD's personal security guy) moved me and my buddy aside and picked him up back onto stage.. Good times.... SOAD is one of my favorite all time bands... During my deployment to Iraq in '03, I forgot my CD case and the only CD I had was in my discman (remember those?), Steal This Album... probably listened to it 2,342,754 times and I still like it to this day.

Also, no mention of Joey Jordison?

I'm sort of underwhelmed by the videos but seeing them live makes all the difference. Danny Walker blew my mind last year at Skully's. I don't even remember the rest of the band playing.
