Darrell Hazell (official thread)

It's about time Purdue made Ohio a priority for recruiting. A school like Purdue hiring a guy like Danny Hope with the intent of poaching truck loads of Florida kids was never a winning formula. Hazell has great inroads in this state, which is far and away the most fertile recruiting state in the north.

Good for him...and as much as I would have loved to see kin at Kent one more year, what happened to Mario Cristobal is enough evidence that when you are considered "The Shit" then you need to strike while the iron is hot. I will root for him 11 games a season.

If you watched the press conference, it was rather interesting how much both Morgan Burke and Darrell Hazell talked to Jim Tressel in the past couple days.

Hazell said Tressel called him back multiple times and Burke told Tressel he didn't want to be Wisconsin and just run the ball. Tressel said don't worry about that (with Hazell).

A couple of things it will be interesting to see about Purdue under Hazell:

i) Will there be any other former Buckeyes on the Purdue sideline with Hazell? Marcus Freeman's the most obvious one, but maybe some other former coaches? Does Jim Heacock have an interest to get back into coaching, and would Hazell give him a call? It might be a smart move, if there's interest.

ii) Will the Boilers continue their 21st century trend of being a uniquely persistent thorn in OSU's side? It's almost been bizarre the extent to which Purdue has consistently and specifically punched above their weight against OSU the past ten years or so. Will it continue?

I actually see Coach Hazell being a benefit to OSU recruiting. He knows the in-state coaches and can make in-roads where UW, MSU, and other B1G programs were picking up recruits. He might nab a top notch recruit every once in awhile, but not enough to impact OSU (where we can take one nationally). This hire will impact the second tier programs more than OSU.

I also wish nothing but success for Coach Hazell and hope he wins every game per year except one during his tenure at PU.

Taver and Paul Haynes don't have jobs right now (unless Bielema retains them). There's another matter if they even would like to work for Bielema.

If Danny Hope concentrated on the rest of his games like he did Ohio State, maybe he'd still have a job right now.

Q&A: Purdue coach Darrell Hazell- ESPN.com
What has Coach [Jim] Tressel told you about this job, and how will you use him to help you with it?

DH: I use him a lot. He's a great sounding board. He's very unbiased. He just tells you what he sees. He's been a great resource for me. The two big things I learned from him are, you've got to make great decisions in critical times, and the other thing is there's got to be a calmness to you that eases your football team.

I'm hoping he can give Hoke a run for his money, and spread a bit of the Ohio wealth around.

I actually see this as a great fit for both parties. Hazell can run the spread and he is a great recruiter who has good ties in Florida (to keep that going). I've always thought Purdue was a fun team to watch and minus their propensity to upset us, I like them and would much prefer they be a power in the Big 10 than Wisky, Ped State, scUM, etc. Best of luck to Coach Hazell and a job well earned.
