Darrell Hazell (official thread)

Pretty scary. If we barely crept past Purdue this year, imagine what it would have been had Hazell been the coach. I guess tOSU has to get better.

There's nothing wrong with that.

I'd rather the B1G got so good that we expect OSU to lose a game every year, but have an awesome shot at the +1 tournament than for OSU to run the table and be left out, because the rest of the conference was so inept, that we were a larger version of the Big East.

The B1G has to be perceived as the premier conference - not just the premier northern conference. If you look at the other major conferences, you have 3 or 4 teams that are incredibly good every year like the SEC's 'Bama, Florida, LSU and (at times) Georgia, or the PAC's Oregon, USC and (anymore) Stanford. Right now, the B1G has Ohio State, with Michigan trying to be rehabilitated into a national power.

Maybe Darrel can get Purdue to where Illinois was during the last part of the 90s/early 2000s to where they expect a good bowl each year, and contend for their division.

Just about everyone in Boiler Nation is excited to have Coach Hazell! From his press conference he seems to be a powerful speaker and a great motivator. Reading what former players have said about Hazell and how good of a coach he was has us excited in West Lafayette. I think he will make great inroads into Midwest recruiting (especially Ohio) unlike Hope, who just wanted to poach the state of FL for the guys who weren't going to Florida or FSU. A lot of people respect how quickly Coach Hazell was able to win with Kent St, and all the years he had as an assistant at tOSU under Tressel will no doubt be an asset to our program. At this point we're just looking to get better each year and ultimately contend for a leaders division title and Rose Bowl. As with every program the ultimate goal is to make it to the National Championship. If coach Hazell can snag some big time recruits away from bigger programs and coach the boys up and catch some breaks, maybe making it to the NC game will not just be a pipe dream for Purdue football in the near future. I look forward to the ride, I have a feeling I'm going to like him a lot better than Danny Hope.

For serious? :so:

Just the Offensive Line Coach, folks.

Bollman Ball not quite back.....yet...

Posted on January 14, 2013 by Mike Carmin

It?s been a week since Darrell Hazell arrived from Kent State?s bowl game, but still no official announcement about his coaching staff.
It?s believed Hazell is waiting to announce all nine assistants at the same time.

You should know five of the coaches already. To recap, three are coming from Kent State ? Jon Heacock, Marcus Freeman and Jafar Williams. Greg Hudson (former Florida State linebackers coach) will be the defensive coordinator. Kevin Sherman, who was Virginia Tech?s receivers coach, is also on board.

Heacock was Kent State?s defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, but is expected to work with the secondary at Purdue. Freeman will also coach on the defensive side. Williams and Sherman are expected to coach on offense.

A new name has surfaced ? Jim Bollman as the offensive line coach, according to an ESPN recruiting story about Ohio lineman Jason Tretter (must be an ESPN Insider subscriber to access).

ESPN?s Jared Shanker wrote: Jim Bollman will be Purdue?s next offensive line coach, and Tretter said Hazell wants to talk to Bollman about him. But Bollman is out of town until Friday, so the two will talk then.

?He said he will let me know what?s happening then,? Tretter said.
Bollman worked with Hazell at Ohio State under Jim Tressel.

He was the Buckeyes? offensive line coach and offensive coordinator from 2001-2011. He spent last season at Boston College as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator, but the school fired head coach Frank Spaziani in November.

Bollman has held NFL jobs at Philadelphia and Chicago and also worked at Michigan State and Virginia. Bollman would bring a ton of experience to the staff and give Hazell a valuable resource.

We should learn more this week as Purdue?s coaches will be on the recruiting trail.

3 OL starters back and lots of upperclassmen with experience in the two deep. They'll have to replace Schmeig at center.

Shavers and Bolden are gone at RB (finally), but they have a crazy looking thunder/lightning duo who have a bit more than mop-up experience:
Raheem Hunt, 42 car, 335 yards (8 ypc @ 5-9, 184)
Brandon Cottom, 23 car, 209 yards (9.1 ypc @ 6-4, 258)

Have to love the mega RBs.
