Darrell Hazell (official thread)

Nah, hazell's resume will look much better after another NC :) Plus it'll give Tressel & Co. another year to look for a replacement for him once they know he's really looking to move up if he gets a shot

I think Hazell wants to stick around for a couple more years of Teddy Ginn....honestly, the guy GB hired is probably actually reducing his workload, seeing as how he will not have to be the RC, obviously..........

I don't think Hazell was with us in 2002...

(edit) just verified that 2004 was his first year with is (couldn't remember if 2003 or 2004 was...).

Good News - Did Anyone Notice?

Something really special happened a few weeks ago and I have been sitting quietly by ,seeing if anyone would pick up on it.

If you recall back when JT was announcing recruiting assignments and coaching changes, he made a really significant announcement. He promoted Coach Hazell to an Assistant Head Coach.

This is significant for a couple of important reasons:

1. He is now one of only a handful black assistant head coaches in D1. In a major program D1 such as ours, there are two.

2. Coach Hazell received this honor after being on Staff for just one year. This speaks volumes about his abilities. JT is a very good developer of Coaches. This in my opinion, is one of the greatest honors Coach Tressel could give someone on his Staff.

3. Coach Conley was generally considered a top 3 recruiting coach. He is one of the best I have ever met. I believe in a few years, Coach Hazell will receive that same kind of respect for his recruiting abilities. He brought in Wells, if he could get Hornsby and a few other key recruits in the next few years, he will be highly respected.

4. Although IMO, he got off to a slow start in FL., (and it does take a while to figure out how JT works), he always treated kids with respect and honesty.

5. His field coaching and game preparation is so complete, it's scary. He works as hard, if not harder than anyone on staff, preparing for games.

So while we are bashing JT for things he can't control, we should look at the things he can control. I think we should all recognize and applaud the fact that JT gave him this promotion and keep our fingers crossed that he doesn't leave to become a head coach too soon....

I don't think one thing has anything to do with the other (referring to the final paragraph), but I wish Coach Hazell all the best as he continues to be an integral part of our program and build his career. I am sure he will make a fine head coach one day, made all the better by his ability to learn from Coach Tressel and contribute to our program.
