Matta zeroing in on new assistant

Dave Dickerson, a former Tulane head coach and Maryland assistant, apparently is at the top of Thad Matta's list of candidates to replace departed assistant Alan Major, according to sources. Major was hired as head coach by Charlotte on Friday.

Dickerson, 43, resigned as head coach at Tulane on March 31 after five difficult seasons in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Green Wave was 68-84 record, including 31-47 in Conference USA, and failed to reach a postseason tournament. Tulane was 8-22 last season.

Before going to Tulane, Dickerson was an assistant to Gary Williams at Maryland for nine seasons and was credited for recruiting some of the players that led the Terrapins to the 2002 NCAA championship, including Juan Dixon, Chris Wilcox, Lonny Baxter and Steve Blake.

Maryland was 212-88 in Dickerson's nine seasons as an assistant and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament five times and Final Four twice.
Adding Dickerson conceivably would strengthen Ohio State's recruiting presence along the East Coast and in the South.

Matta could announce a hiring as soon as Monday. The mandatory posting for the job vacancy expires Sunday.

I think this would be very nice especially for recruiting as mentioned in the article plus he has HC experience although somewhat limited.

If he indeed becomes the new assistant, hope it's a good mix between the younger guys in Miller and Boals with someone coach Matta's age (somewhat like the guy he'd be replacing in Alan Major).

Also hope it helps recruiting and on-court performance (in-game adjustments).

Considering coach Matta has somewhat a good eye for assistant coaches, I'd trust his decision.

Major's replacement and other loose ends (Hoops & Scoops: an OSU basketball blog)

I've been trying to enjoy some time off. But the beat goes on, so if you haven't read it elsewhere by now, here's what's happening on several fronts:
-- I contacted former Tulane coach Dave Dickerson today and, while he said that a deal is not done for him to replace Alan Major on Thad Matta's staff, he left the distinct impression it is just a matter of Ohio State making it official.
A source indicated the hiring is all but finalized. Matta did not respond to a message seeking comment. Dickerson was reported last week to be Matta's top choice.
An announcement may not come until late this week because coaches are allowed to be on the road recruiting through Wednesday and the Ohio State staff has been out visiting prospects.

Dickerson becomes a Buckeye

Dave Dickerson, former head coach at Tulane, has been added to the Big Ten Champion Ohio State men's basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Thad Matta announced Monday. His appointment begins immediately.

"We are extremely excited to bring Dave on staff," Matta said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge to our program as a coach and former player. Through the interview process it was easy to see how much he appreciates The Ohio State University and what it stands for. I know he is ready to hit the ground running to build upon our great basketball tradition."

OSU men's basketball: Matta adds ex-Tulane coach to his staff

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When Thad Matta was hired as Ohio State men's basketball coach six years ago, he called Dave Dickerson about joining his staff.

"I was at my dream job, as an assistant at the University of Maryland, my alma mater," Dickerson said. "But we did have those preliminary discussions, and those discussions turned into a friendship."

When Matta called again a couple of weeks ago, Dickerson had no job.

Now he does.

Ohio State last night announced Dickerson's hiring to replace assistant coach Alan Major, who became Charlotte's coach April 9.

"I'm looking forward to being back in a program like Ohio State, where everything is in place to compete at the highest level and to compete for a national championship," Dickerson said. "That's the situation I had when I left the University of Maryland, and I wanted to get back to a situation like that."

OSU introduces new men's assistant basketball coach

Next season, the Ohio State men?s basketball team will have a fresh group of faces, including top-notch recruits, and most recently, a new assistant coach.

Dave Dickerson, former head basketball coach at Tulane University, joins the Buckeyes as they try to improve on their 29-8 performance this past season.

?I?m very excited to start at The Ohio State University,? said Dickerson. ?Just working at an institution where you know you have everything available to win at a high level, it?s an idea that?s very entertaining.?

For Dickerson, leaving Tulane and heading to OSU was an easy decision to make.

?When this job came up at Ohio State, it?s one of the best jobs in the country,? he said. ?It?s a great situation.?

Coach Thad Matta has wanted to make Davidson a member of the coaching staff since he began at Ohio State six years ago, and finally, the pieces fell together.

?With Dave, six years ago I kind of begged and pleaded with him,? said Matta. ?I?ve just always been impressed with him, his style. I was going to wait as long as I needed to for him, but fortunately we got things worked out quickly.?

Dickerson already making difference for OSU
By Blake Williams

Published: Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta introduced his new assistant in April with promises that he would extend recruiting pipelines and improve post players.

Nearly six months later, it seems Dave Dickerson is doing just that.

"If you look at our staff makeup, we are kind of Midwestern predominant," Dickerson said. "With me coming on to the staff, you do bring a different flare that we did not have."

With coaching experience along the East Coast, in the Southeast and most recently in the Deep South as the head coach at Tulane University in New Orleans, Dickerson's flare has expanded OSU's recruiting footprint.

"He has recruited at the highest level and he is very, very well-connected," Matta said.

He has already convinced one player to wear Scarlet and Gray.

Forward Evan Ravenel transferred to OSU from Boston College, in part because of the relationship he developed with Dickerson while being recruited by Tulane, Matta said. Ravenel will sit out a year before joining the team on the court.

Dickerson played down his importance in landing the transfer, calling the timing of the situation "lucky."

Ohio State spotlight: Men's basketball

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY: Assistant coach Dave Dickerson, left, was thrilled to be offered a spot on the Ohio State coaching staff last spring. (Neal C. Lauron, Dispatch)

Sport: Men's basketball

Position: Assistant coach

Hometown: Olar, S.C.

College: Maryland (1990)

Christmas came early for Dave Dickerson.

Shortly after his March 31 resignation as Tulane men's basketball coach, Ohio State coach Thad Matta called to see if he would be interested in joining his staff if, as Matta expected, assistant Alan Major left to become head coach at Charlotte.

"I could never in my wildest dreams have thought I would leave Tulane and be in a situation where I'm working with the second-best team in the country," Dickerson said.

Being in a situation like this is all Dickerson, 43, has wanted in basketball.

Despite a bad experience as a player at Maryland, he later returned there as an assistant coach and helped the Terrapins win the 2002 NCAA championship.

After Hurricane Katrina helped ruin his hopes for his own program at Tulane, he is again in that position.

"I never had a lot of dreams of being an NBA player, even though I loved basketball," Dickerson said. "What I wanted to do was just win a national championship and an (Atlantic Coast Conference) championship."

Q&A: Ohio State assistant coach Dave Dickerson

I do a lot of interviews with coaches, players and administrators. More often than not, a 1500 word .doc file will yield one or two quotes by the time it is edited into an article. I find this to be shamefully wasteful.

Here at STF, I strive to be like the Native American and use all of the buffalo, not just the skin and horns. So, as we ramp up to actual game time in college hoops, I?m going to share some raw Q&As I did over the summer.

Today, it?s former Tulane head coach and current Ohio State assistant Dave Dickerson.

You were a head coach for a year yourself. Does that give you a greater appreciation for the job Thad Matta is doing at Ohio State?

I?ve always been impressed with Thad. I was even impressed with him as an assistant coach when he was at Western Carolina and I was at James Madison and Radford. I was impressed with him then. And the job he?s done in seven years at Ohio State, not only winning games but winning Big Ten titles and competing for a national championship, but the job he?s done changing the culture of college basketball at Ohio State and the overall program, he?s done an unbelievable job.

What kinds of little things does the coaching staff look at to help the team find that extra edge?

Last year it was somewhat different because a lot of the guys had competed on the road in the Big Ten on our team. Even though we?re very talented this year, last year we were probably the most experienced team in the Big Ten and in college basketball. It was somewhat easy to go on the road because some of the guys had gone through the rigors of the Big Ten. This year that will be very different, because Will Buford will be our lone senior and Evan Ravenel now will be our lone junior, and he?s a transfer from Boston College who didn?t play a minute for us last year. He sat out. We have eleven freshmen and sophomores. We?re going to have to be creative to get our guys ready for Big Ten play on the road. The most important thing for us right now is to get ready for having a good summer.
