Browns bump Denzel Ward up to first team
Posted by Josh Alper on June 5, 2018, 4:22 PM EDT

The Browns have been adamant that Tyrod Taylor will be their starting quarterback in Week One while Baker Mayfield begins his NFL career as a backup, but their other first-round pick may not have to wait for his chance to run with the first team.

T.J. Carrie and Terrance Mitchell worked as the first-team cornerbacks during an OTA practice open to reporters last week, but Denzel Ward was alongside Carrie when team drills got underway on Tuesday. Coach Hue Jackson said he’s seen Ward “getting a little bit better” every day in practice and that’s why he got bumped up in the rotation.

Watch: Denzel Ward lays a major hit in Browns preseason debut
The Cleveland Browns had the early surprise of the 2018 NFL Draft last spring when the team took cornerback Denzel Ward out of Ohio State with the fourth overall selection in the draft. It wasn't that Ward was much of a reach, but some believed he was going to be taken a bit later in the first round. The Browns disagreed.

So far, it looks like Cleveland was right. Ward has quickly worked his way up the depth chart and become the Browns No. 1 corner. On Thursday night, Ward made his preseason debut against the New York Giants. It didn't take long for the corner to make his impact felt quite literally. On just the third play of the game, Ward laid a major hit on Giants wide receiver Hunter Sharp to break up a pass attempt from quarterback Eli Manning.

Unfortunately, Ward was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct in taunting Sharp when he stood over him and said something. The Browns likely won't care too much about that -- taunting is pretty correctable -- but they will love the big hit. Ward is considered a smaller corner, listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds. Despite his smaller stature, Ward showed in preseason camp that he's able to handle bigger receivers, matching up with a bigger receiver target in Cleveland's Josh Gordon. He definitely showed his toughness on this play.

Buckeye fans will not be surprised by Ward delivering big hits as he did just that during his time with the Scarlet and Gray. One hit that all Ohio State fans will remember is from last year's win over Maryland.
