CB Eli Apple (All B1G, National Champion, Miami Dolphins)

Another great get by the Staff and UFM. It continues to be a great time to be a Buckeye

From an ESPN interview earlier in the month

How much are you working on the 2013 class right now?

UM: Oh, we're killing it. We're all over it.

I'd say that was a bit of an understatement

“I knew it all along that I wanted to go to Ohio State … ever since Urban Meyer got there,” Woodard told Sporting News right after the decision was announced. “They’ve told me they like that I have a nice physical presence, they like my speed and that I’m tall and I can handle one half of the field.”

Woodard also told Sporting News that he had a good relationship with future teammate Cameron Burrows, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound DB out of Trotwood, Ohio, who committed to the Buckeyes in January.

Alabama, Boston College, California, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue and Wisconsin are some of the other schools that had offered Woodard. It should be noted that Penn State once did very well in New Jersey, but the recent turmoil in the program and Greg Schiano’s departure from Rutgers may have helped Ohio State.

“(Schiano leaving) might have had a little bit to do with not going to Rutgers, but even if he’d stayed I probably would have gone to Ohio State. I just might have thought about it a little bit longer,” Woodard said.

"We have each other's numbers and I talk to him a couple of times per week," Woodard told BuckeyeGrove.com. "We've built a pretty nice relationship; he's a really cool guy. I don't feel like you (shy away from a school) because the competition might be too high. At the end of the day, we're both going to get on the field so I don't even worry about that aspect of it. Every college has great competition so I feel like it's not a big factor to me."

"I probably wouldn't have committed until June. I really liked coach Schiano and Hafley," Woodard said. "And Rutgers is close by and all. But Ohio State is where my heart always was."

"Rutgers was a solid possibility for him," said Eastern coach Dan Spittal, adding that former Eastern defensive back Ryan Logan plays for the Scarlet Knights. "He has a former teammate there in Logan. But with Greg (Schiano) leaving and coach Hafley leaving, that probably had something to do with Eli not choosing Rutgers."

Woodard (6-1, 180 pounds) made unofficial visits to his three finalists and was sold on Ohio State after talking with Urban Meyer, who is entering his first season as the Buckeyes' coach.

"He went to Ohio State a few times and just became enamored with the place," Spittal said. "I guess meeting Urban there really sold him. He coached one of our kids, offensive lineman Phil Trautwein, at Florida. I had a relationship with Urban after meeting him when he spoke at Rutgers last year.

"We weren?t sure with the new staff coming in (at Rutgers) if they were still going to be interested in Eli and obviously they were. But Eli went out there (to Ohio State) this past weekend and he was ready to commit. And he?s satisfied with his decision."

I don't see a 2013 defense thread, so I will comment here.

Eli showed good run support in his hi-light film, and commentators are saying that he is big too.

With people saying Eli Woodard and Cameron Burrows are both big and have run support talent, I almost wonder if tOSU can play 3 (or 4) corners in obvious passing situations (star)? Give the line an extra second for Shane Morris to be sacked!

I also remember times when tOSU played 3 defensive ends, and I am wondering if tOSU could play 3 (or 4) again on obvious passing downs?

Maybe I better stick to Madden, but I am dreaming of seeing 4 DEs and 4 CBs could on 3rd down and 15. That would be the next best thing to maximum blitz.

Similarly, since in 2011 tOSU played 4 defensive tackles, I think that could be done again in running situations (as I believe was done against WI), say on 3rd and 1.
