CB Kendall Sheffield (Official Thread)

I think the Falcons got a "diamond in the ruff" here. I don't think Sheffield has even come close to reaching his true potiential yet. I believe had he stayed another year at Ohio State he'd develope into a "lock down CB", be another Shawn Springs, and be a #1 pick in 2020.

I think he could stay in college until he's 30 and would never be anywhere near Shawn Springs.

OK, how about Antoine Winfield....Malcolm Jenkins....Ahmed Plummer...Chris Gamble....Nate Clements?

I still think Sheffield has the biggest differential bertween how he actually played and the potiential that he could play at of any of the Buckeyes in the draft.

Yea... i think Hafley could have brought him to another level. Dont know quite Springs' level, but a lot better coaching than we had after Ash and Coombs left...

How many years would it take Mike Weber to become Eddie George, Maurice Clarett or Ezekiel Elliott?

I think Sheffield had the unparalleled misfortune of following an unprecedented run of DBs that will never be repeated. He also had some really rough coaching and deployment, which misrepresented his flaws (particularly when the mistakes and misdeployment upfront left them further exposed)

Some well known (and largely well loved) starting corners at OSU in the past decade or so:
Doran Grant, Armani Reeves, Travis Howard, Devon Torrence, Andre Amos, Chimdi Chekwa, Donald Washington, Tyler Everett, Ashton Youboty.

2018 Kendall is right there with most of those names (if not ahead).

However, back then there was a stud every once in awhile, not 6 high draft picks in 4 years (which likely returns next year, obliterating any hope of perspective on the how rare that is). Not back to back rookies turned pro bowlers.

Grant was significantly better than Sheffield and most of that list in college...
I dont know how many of them had Kendall's physical abilities... most of those guys peaked talent in Columbus (Doran) because they had excellent coaching ... Sheffield was let down by the coaching staff imo.

Take out Grant, who was coached by the GOAT, then look at many of those names and tell me Kendall can't hang with many of them.

Most of those guys obliterated expectations by a few miles, and that unbelievable run ruined the measuring stick. Don't believe me? Ask what the attitude will be when Okudah and Wade give them another secondary with all-american level play outside (and possibly 2+ pretty darn good safeties). Will it be amazement and wonder? No, it will be, finally, back up to OSU standards. (which in terms of striving for excellence is great, in terms of proper analysis is insanity)

Hooker, Lattimore, Ward all have an argument for the best DB in the Tressel/Meyer era. (for simplicity, I'm calling Doss a Cooper recruit, also a different era for DBs. Doss would be Darron Lee or Brendan White 2019 in this era)
Conley is in the best conversation as the best corner of '02-13 recruits (I'd probably go Gamble, Conley, Roby on performance though Bradley was also hamstrung by a scheme and surrounding play).

Despite that, and being a high pick, he's still a notch below the other 3 meyer dbs. So is Apple. Bell is too (maybe another notch, though not at OSU).

Even steady forces like Damon Webb were underappreciated because of the greatness flying through Columbus back then. Boy was he appreciated at last when he was gone.

Buckeye rookies Dre’Mont Jones, Kendall Sheffield impress in first NFL action
Pretty good first impression by the Ohio State alumni.

So, the NFL Hall of Fame game is not exactly the standard for what players might look like during the regular — it isn’t even the standard for what teams are willing to show or try in the preseason — but it is the first glimpse of football for the season.

Before all 32 NFL teams take the field, or any of the college football teams embark on their season, the Hall of Fame game is the annual kick-off of fall.

That game took place last Thursday, and while starting quarterbacks don’t often get reps, and it’s mostly a way of evaluating rookies, new acquisitions and bubble players, there were a couple of new NFL Buckeyes who took the field and impressed.

Thursday’s pre-preseason matchup featured the Denver Broncos (Jeff Heuerman, Dre’Mont Jones) and Atlanta Falcons (Kendall Sheffield). The Broncos won 14-10, but much like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, the points and outcome don’t really matter.

Kendall Sheffield
After tearing his pec muscle at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Sheffield dropped to the fourth round of the draft, but has been making believers out of his teammates and coaches in Atlanta so far this training camp.

Prior to Thursday’s Hall of Fame game, Falcons’ head coach Dan Quinn talked about Sheffield’s speed and how he’s already impressed:

“For Sheffield, it’s his speed for sure that allows him to stay down. He can run with all the receivers here, and we’ve got some fast ones.”

The Buckeye showed Quinn, and everyone else, that he could translate everything good he’s shown at practice onto the field during games. Sheffield made five total tackles (four solo) and had a forced fumble in the contest.

The Dallas Cowboys added two Buckeyes on Tuesday.

The Cowboys made a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for Johnathan Hankins, sending a pair of late-round draft picks in exchange for the former Ohio State defensive tackle.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are also signing former Ohio State cornerback Kendall Sheffield to their practice squad.

Sheffield joins the Cowboys’ practice squad after he was waived from the Houston Texans’ injured reserve list earlier this month. He spent his first three NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, appearing in 38 games with 20 starts from 2019-21, but has not played in a regular-season game this year.

With the additions of Hankins and Sheffield, the Dallas Cowboys now have six former Ohio State players under contract. Hankins joins Ezekiel Elliott, Noah Brown and Malik Hooker on the Cowboys’ active roster, while former Ohio State long snapper Jake McQuaide is on the Cowboys’ injured reserve after tearing his triceps earlier this season.
