Awesome, awesome get. Elite player and at a position of need. As much as I loved Holmes and his upside/long-term potential, I think Sheffield has a better shot to play right away at a high level. Welcome aboard Kendall! Time to break out the Kenny G...

WHAT THE COMMITMENT OF KENDALL SHEFFIELD MEANS FOR OHIO STATE'S 2017 RECRUITING CLASS

Finding the right fit for your college football program isn't just about what happens on the field, but off it as well. Today, Ohio State added a key piece. How will that commitment impact the Buckeyes?

Ohio State locked down a commitment from the top-rated junior college cornerback in the country on Tuesday when Brenham, Texas, Blinn College four-star Kendall Sheffield picked the Buckeyes over several offers closer to home.

Let's take a look at what Sheffield — the fifth-best JUCO prospect overall in the Class of 2017 — brings to Columbus.

ON THE FIELD
Sheffield has good size and long arms that will help him in coverage, but what stands out about him is his speed.

A standout on the track, Sheffield won the Texas high school state championship in the 300-meter hurdle and finished second in the 110-meter hurdle.

He isn't considered the most physical cornerback, but shows tremendous quickness and closes on the football better than any prospect in the country.

Sheffield wasn't asked to come up to make a tackle often, so he's still raw in that regard. But when he does, he can certainly make a game-changing hit.

IN THE CLASS
Ohio State wasn't certain to have room for Sheffield in its current recruiting class as recently as Saturday.

The Buckeyes were awaiting decisions from five-star cornerback Darnay Holmes and four-star safety Bubba Bolden at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, so Sheffield had to wait and see how that played out before making the call himself.

Sheffield becomes the second cornerback to commit to Ohio State in the last four days, joining the top-rated player at the position in Jeffrey Okudah. Okudah committed on Saturday during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Sheffield is also the sixth defensive back in the class, an unusually large group that includes Shaun Wade, Isaiah Pryor, Marcus Williamson and Amir Riep.

5-Star Junior College Cornerback Kendall Sheffield Commits to Ohio State

KendallSheffieldESPN.jpg

Rarely does Ohio State dip into the Junior College ranks for prospects, but this year with the mass exodus of talent at the defensive back position, they did just that. Five-star cornerback Kendall Sheffield committed to the Buckeyes on Tuesday and now joins a loaded defensive backfield for the Buckeyes in the class of 2017.

The commitment was first reported by ESPN.com.

"After a great season at Blinn College, and an exciting recruiting process, I have decided to finish my collegiate career at The Ohio State University," Sheffield told ESPN.com. "I am excited to join Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, and look forward to helping Buckeye Nation return to the College Football Playoff."

Sheffield started his college career when he committed to the University of Alabama in 2015, however he never saw the field and redshirted in his only season in Tuscaloosa. In August of 2016 it was reported that he was going to transfer out of the program and decided to go the JUCO route rather than sit out a year at the FBS level.

He transferred to Blinn College in his home state of Texas for his redshirt freshman year. Sheffield played defensive back as well as punt and kick returner for the Blinn Buccaneers. In their opener he had a punt return for a touchdown and he followed that up later in the year with a kickoff return for a touchdown. On defense he played in all nine games recording 31 tackles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and a team leading 11 pass break ups.

Sheffield committed to the Buckeyes over Texas A&M, Texas, TCU and USC

What does this commitment mean for the Buckeyes?
