Ransom could potentially be the strongest candidate to push for early playing time among all the freshmen who just arrived, as he plays an important position where there is still some uncertainty going into the fall. While Josh Proctor is expected to lead the depth chart at the deep safety spot and Marcus Hooker is a strong candidate for playing time there as well, Ransom is talented enough to climb the depth chart quickly if he makes a good first impression this summer.

It’s more likely that Ransom will contribute on special teams than play regularly on defense as a freshman, but he is a frontrunner to be Ohio State’s deep safety of the future if his skill set develops as expected over his first two years on campus. A four-star recruit who hits hard and shows good range on film, Ransom has already drawn high praise from Ryan Day, who said in December that Ransom “is going to be as good a safety as we've had here in a long time.”

Agreed with the article, Ransom is probably the highest on my list of defensive prospects that could play right away. He has the physical build and willingness to lay the wood that I think has been somewhat lacking at the safety position for us lately. Also helps that he is a pure safety that has played the position for some time, so there is no real adjustment needed in terms of position change. At bare minimum, Ransom should be a special teams terror this year.

DB Lathan Ransom
One of the talented defensive backs in the 2020 recruiting class, Ransom didn’t enroll early at Ohio State. But with the pandemic shutting down most of the spring and summer activities, he never fell behind. And then when fall camp came, he made the most of his opportunities. Now with the defensive backfield in flux and going through depth issues, Ransom has found his way on the field. In the fourth quarter, Ransom delivered a crushing fourth-down hit to break up a pass that would have given Northwestern a first down. Instead, with the pass break-up, the game was all but over. Ransom may have to play a bigger role against Clemson if the Buckeyes don’t have their starting defensive backs on the field.

That’s what I noticed most by him as well, his reads and knowing where he is and is supposed to be at. When he was shifting around pre-snap, he wasn’t wandering aimlessly, instead carefully reading the QB. Just how quickly he’s coming on is really impressive. The DB mill about to churn out another 1st rounder...
