S Malik Hooker (All B1G, All-American, Dallas Cowboys)

The number of offers that keep going out to offensive players has had me pondering about the possibility of Lonnie ending up on D.

Also did Hooker just take Brown's slot?

I think Urban's formula of minimizing redshirts and being upfront with kids who have little chance of playing ensures a higher turnover ratio, which allows bigger classes to replenish.

Not going to name names, but some of the kids who's recently left the program on good terms would've been riding the bench for five years under Tress. Tress won in his own way, but Urban's clearly got his own ideas too.

PS: Welcome to the family Malik! :osu:

Hooker is projected at Safety. So my worry is that he took Smith's spot. I hope this doesn't mean Meyer is hearing bad things about Lattimore/Smith.

Is this really after only one year of organized football? This means a TON of potential down the road. LOVE IT!!

Scout $ - CoachSpeak: Hooker's Athleticism Stands Out

7/29

Interview by Dohn with Malik's Coach....Thinks Malik will end up at Safety at Ohio State & he's going to play safety this coming season as well. Malik's coach speaks very highly of the Ohio State staff, especially Luke Fickell, who was Malik's main recruiter.

Another quick observation: during LLoyd Carr's heydays at TSUN, it felt like just about every talented speedsters from Eastern PA wanted to go there or had them in the top two with Pitt. That hasn't been the case under Hoke.

Malik did have a SCum offer also.

Just about every report has hooker playing S, but you never know. The staff covets versatility, just like last year Gareon Conley could play WR or cb. Maybe we try hooker at S first, and WR can be a fall back option. That's one of those "good problems"
Btw, IMO, this shouldnt rule out smith in this class either. I still see he and lattimore in this class, especially with us losing Barnett, Bryant and brown(and I believe wood as well).

New Castle football star picks Ohio State
July 30, 2013
By Mike White / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Two-sport standout Malik Hooker decided months ago that football would be his sport of choice in college. Monday night Hooker decided his future would be at Ohio State.

Hooker, a talented football and basketball player at New Castle High School, accepted a football scholarship to Ohio State. He called Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and informed him of his decision. Hooker is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior who was recruited to play defensive back, but he also is a standout receiver.

"I just thought it was the right time to do this," Hooker said. "I sat down with my coaches and family and talked it over. We just felt it was the right thing to do."

Hooker is an interesting story because he didn't play high school football until 2012. He showed enough talent and potential in one season that he had close to two-dozen scholarship offers from Division I colleges by the spring. He said Pitt was his other top choice, but he also had scholarship offers from Penn State, West Virginia and numerous others. He visited Alabama this weekend, but the Crimson Tide didn't offer.

"When I went [to Ohio State] for a visit, I got a spark that I haven't gotten when I went to other schools," said Hooker, who made the Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 in basketball in the winter.

Hooker used the word crazy to describe his odyssey from someone who didn't play high school football as a freshman or sophomore to a big-time recruit in only one year.

"I think about it every day," Hooker said. "A lot of kids play since their freshman year and don't have the opportunities I have. I'm lucky. But it is kind of crazy, too."

I think you meant to say western PA. :)

Scout ranked Hooker among the WRs, Rivals ranked him among Safetys.

Not that it's overly important but Rivals, 247 & ESPN have him listed as an Athlete.

My speculation about Johnson took place before Hooker committed & was merely based on the number of offers continuing to go out to offensive skill players. My final line really should have "if the above is true, did Hooker take Brown's slot". It's really nothing more than idle speculation based on a lack of knowledge regarding the plan the coaches have in place.

Regardless, Malik looks to be a heck of an athlete & he'll find the position that best suits him once he's on campus.
