Growing up, my father was in the military and was often away for long periods of time. While he checked on us daily, my mother managed our lives while he was deployed. My mother did a fantastic job managing our family and caring for me and my siblings, but I understand how difficult it is for one parent to care for a family.

I also have friends and other family members who were raised in single parent homes, and I saw the pressure and anxiety single mothers and fathers are under to provide for their families. I know how difficult it is for single parents to juggle the responsibilities of raising children, and to provide a home with enough space for the children to live comfortably and have privacy.

As I take the next step toward achieving my NFL dream, I am excited and humbled to use my performance at my NFL Pro Day to support Warrick Dunn Charities. It is important to me to use this great opportunity to positively impact others. I hope the funds that I raise will help children with single parents to have homes that are comfortable for them so that they have space to grow. Please join me in providing hope!

"In terms of Wade, Wade just didn’t have the cover skills this year playing outside that he did when he was in the slot," Kiper explained. "I think he could end up being an inside safety type or a slot corner where he felt more comfortable rather than being out on an island. So he’s going to be an interesting guy. I think he would have been a first-round pick had he played up to the level you expected or certainly as he did in 2019 when he was playing in the slot. So to me, he’s a second- or third-round pick now."

According to NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter, Wade has a chance to land with a familiar coach in the 2021 NFL Draft. Reuter has projected the Jacksonville Jaguars to select Wade at the top of the third round in his latest mock draft.

The Jaguars are an interesting landing spot. The organization hired Urban Meyer and he will enter into his first season at the helm. Meyer has a relationship with Wade as he recruited and coached him in 2018.


Meyer is likely to put Wade in a position to be successful. The Jaguars also have talented cornerback CJ Henderson on the roster. If Wade was selected by the Jaguars, he would likely not have the pressure to be an outside cornerback.

Speaking on Wednesday night’s episode of NFL Network’s Path To the Draft, former scout Bucky Brooks says he sees Wade as a fit in the fourth round of this month’s draft with the Seattle Seahawks.

"Shaun Wade didn't have a great year this year," Brooks said, "but when you're seeing him play, and he played in a defense that was similar (to the Seahawks) a season ago, he actually was very, very productive. He's a guy that's probably better suited to be at Nickel corner. Great instincts and eyes. If you get him in the right situation, put him in the right scheme, I would expect them to thrive. The Seahawks need more ball players. I think he can be a ball player in this defense."

In speaking with the media on a teleconference early last month, ESPN's Mel Kiper explained why he believes Wade fell off.

After a mixed 2020 season at Ohio State, cornerback Shaun Wade enters the 2021 NFL Draft with his stock murky. When asked Friday afternoon on NFL Network by NFL Now show host Andrew Siciliano about what he tells teams about this past year, Wade was direct.

"I just tell them COVID happened, injury happened, surgery happened, knee problem happened, toe happened, family situation happened — so, yeah, I was going through a lot of things," Wade said. "Games counted and the season counted, happened, so it's a part of the process. God works in mysterious ways, so I just try to take it day by day and leave it in His hands."

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Wade totaled 92 tackles (five for loss), six interceptions and three forced fumbles as a three-year cornerback at Ohio State in 35 games from 2018-20.

"Definitely inside, I got my reps at," Wade said. "Outside, barely. I didn't start practicing that until September, our camp — which really wasn't a camp. So it is what it is, but I'm just going to continue getting better. I know what I can do on the field. If a team needs me to play safety, I'll play safety — corner, nickel, star. It doesn't matter. I can do it all."

After starring inside as a third-year sophomore during the Buckeyes' 2019 season, Wade's move outside for the 2020 campaign came with a learning curve while battling injuries and other elements.

"After surgery, getting the toe right, toe is way, way better now," Wade said. "Had a pro day the other day, did good there. So I'm just, like I said, enjoying the process. I can't wait until this process is over and get to join my new team for real."

In the months leading up to the draft, Wade has drawn interest from nearly every NFL team. While he says he hasn’t personally kept count of how many interviews he’s had, his father Randy recently tweeted said his son had spoken with every NFL team but three – the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks – and Shaun said it has been exciting to hear from so many scouts and coaches.

“It’s definitely exciting,” Wade said. “The fun thing about it is to show everybody your face, your character, see their character from that team because their character reflects how the team is.”

The pre-draft process is almost over now, though, and by the end of next week, Wade will know where he will begin his professional football career. He’ll be back in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, to watch the draft with his family, and he’s looking forward to sharing the moment with them.

“Just all the sacrifices they have done for me, the people that have been around me, I’m definitely thankful for them,” Wade said. “I’m just thankful for being around everybody and very, very excited.”

As the draft approaches ever closer, his excitement to start his NFL career continues to grow. But he knows that excitement will rise to a whole new level when he gets the call next week from the team that is drafting him.

“I know that phone call is gonna hit different,” Wade said.

I’m really kinda stunned I know he’s not an outside cover corner but half way through the 5th and he’s still on the board. talent is there but can’t help but wonder if it’s his dad or something unrelated to football
