DB Shaun Wade (1st Team All American, New England Patriots)

Agreed that I think the talent and ceiling on Wade is about as high as it gets. If he taps into it, he is going to be special. I think Okudah is right there but that is also why I was out of my mind excited when we got both. Then you have Williamson, who I though looked good in the spring game as well in the same class...Riep too. I guess I am saying we are set at DB.
Soooo, it’s safe to say you “stand with Wade”?

SKULL SESSION: BILLY PRICE ON THE BRINK OF RETURN, LEGEND OF BLUE IN SHOE BET, AND SHAUN WADE'S LIKELIEST ROUTE

SPECIAL TEAMS SHAUN. Shaun Wade drew rave reviews when he practiced last year. Unfortunately multiple injuries prevented him from seeing the field.

Recruiting status doesn't mean anything in the OSU DB rooom. First he must prove he's healthy. Then he'll likely have to shine on special teams first.

From Tim Bielik of cleveland.com:

Wade's redshirt year makes it easy to forget how hyped he was coming out of high school. Now that he's much healthier, he will be on the field in some capacity in the fall. It's possible he could have a season like what Okudah had last season. Okudah was the fourth cornerback on the depth chart behind the top three of Denzel Ward, Damon Arnette and Kendall Sheffield. Ward's departure to the NFL Draft means a spot in that top three is open, and it will likely go to Okudah.

New Ohio State cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson said in the spring that he is open to rotating three cornerbacks once again. Wade will likely find himself on the outside of that rotation.

Wade should embrace it. He could block three key punts or kicks on the way to a title and he would never have to look far for a credible job in Columbus for the rest of his life.

OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE BACK SHAUN WADE COULD SEE PLAYING TIME AT SAFETY

96151_h.jpg

As Ohio State looks for improvement at safety following its season opener against Oregon State, the Buckeyes are experimenting with one of their talented young cornerbacks playing the position.

Following some chatter this week that the Buckeyes could move redshirt freshman defensive back Shaun Wade to safety, defensive coordinator Greg Schiano confirmed Thursday during the weekly coaches' radio show on 97.1 The Fan that Wade has spent some time practicing at safety in addition to the outside cornerback and slot cornerback positions.

"Shaun is a multi-talented guy," Schiano said. "We’re going to move Shaun all over the place. He’s a guy that I can see getting a bigger and bigger role as time goes on."

While cornerbacks are sometimes moved to safety because they struggle at the cornerback position, Schiano said that's not the case with Wade, but simply that he has the ability to play both positions well.

"I think Shaun can play in the nickel, I think Shaun can play safety, I think Shaun can play at corner," Schiano said. "Most of the times when you move guys from corner to safety, it’s because ‘Well, they’re just not quite good enough to be a corner,’ especially around here, right, it’s elite to be a corner. Shaun can do that."

Is Cornerback Shaun Wade Moving to Safety? Maybe

Shaun-Wade-In-Coverage-1170x780.jpg

Last week against Oregon State, the Buckeye safeties did not have their best games. Sophomore Isaiah Pryor and redshirt sophomore Jahsen Wint were both making their first starts, and doing it without incumbent starter Jordan Fuller, who was held back due to a hamstring.

Both Pryor and Wint were involved in allowing big plays, and it was no doubt a learning experience.

The Buckeyes are expected to have Fuller back this week, which will obviously help, but they could also be getting a hand from redshirt freshman cornerback Shaun Wade.

Wade came to Ohio State as the No. 2 cornerback in the 2017 class, behind teammate Jeff Okudah at No. 1. Both he and Okudah enrolled early, and both had very solid spring camps for freshmen. Unfortunately, Wade suffered an abdominal injury and missed his freshman season.

He was healthy this spring, however, and competed for a spot in the Buckeyes’ cornerback rotation. While the rotation opened with Kendall Sheffield, Damon Arnette, and Okudah, there has been talk from defensive coordinator Greg Schiano that Wade could possibly enter the rotation as well.

Wade made his Ohio State debut at cornerback last week, finishing with three tackles and looking more than eager in run support. In terms of pass coverage, Oregon State didn’t look all that interested in testing him.

Speaking on the Urban Meyer call-in show on Thursday, Greg Schiano said that we would be seeing more of Wade moving forward following a very solid performance last week at Oregon State.

I know a lot of people would rather see Okudah or Arnette slide back to safety and insert Wade at corner but, I think that Wade has the best football IQ of the bunch and to me that's even more important than his physical capabilities playing back there.
