Who knew "quarterback trainer" was part of Tyreke Johnson's skillset. If the whole five-star defensive back thing doesn't work out for him, I'm sure there's some way to market his ability to teach a cheerleader to throw a football.

Also, shouts to Keyli and all, but we're just going to completely ignore the girl running a perfect route, snagging a ball above her head with no issues, and turning upfield to the crib like she's Mike Thomas? She needs Zone-6'd.

6 Buckeye Football Players Facing Important Springs: Defense

Spring football can seem like one of the less-intense parts of the year for a college football player. Far from the bright lights and screaming crowds of the fall, those 15 spring practices are nonetheless one of the most important months in many players’ careers.

It’s the time when the young backups finally get a chance to replace the departed stars and run with the first-team.

It’s also the first chance the early-enrolling freshmen get to start building their case for playing time.

But there is a third category of player on the roster this spring: veterans who are still working to earn their way to regular playing time.

These mostly aren’t guys who were top backups last year, and in line for the starting job this season. These are players who’ve been working for several years to get onto the two-deep or into the regular rotation, and who seemingly have a clearer path to get there this fall.

CB Tyreke Johnson, RS Sophomore

A 5-star prospect in the class of 2018, Johnson was ranked as the No. 5 player in Florida and the 21st-best in the entire nation. He lost his black stripe before the end of fall camp that year, seemingly putting him in prime position to earn playing time, but he redshirted that fall instead.

He entered 2019 with an opportunity to start working his way into a backup role, but mostly watched as Cameron Brown, Sevyn Banks, and Amir Riep saw extensive action ahead of him. Johnson played in six games, recording three tackles.

This spring, the corner position is pretty much wide open. Outside of Shaun Wade, the entire defensive backfield from 2019 is off to the NFL.

The man who recruited him to OSU, Kerry Coombs, is now back. That should be good news for Johnson, who has a chance to make a big impact this fall.

Tyreke Johnson (Five-star; No. 2 S, No. 21 Overall in 2018)

One of the most talked about position battles this offseason will be at cornerback. Gone are the pair of starting outside corners in Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette, with the duo prepared to move on to what should be successful NFL careers. The return of Shaun Wade is a massive boost for the Buckeyes’ secondary in 2020, but they will still need to find another two starting corners. There are a bunch of defensive backs who will enter camp in that competition, but one under the radar guy is former five-star recruit Tyreke Johnson.

Ranked one spot behind Vincent in the 2018 class, Johnson was listed as a safety coming out of high school. Ohio State, however, has listed the 6-foot-1 athlete as a corner, and that is the position group in which he has spent his time in Columbus. After redshirting his freshman year, Johnson was next to invisible in 2019. The DB played just 57 total snaps over six games played, while also appearing on special teams in two other games. With the level of talent the Buckeyes had among its top three corners, not many other guys really got much of a chance to see the field.

That is going to change in 2020, as new defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has already discussed returning to a rotation at cornerback. That is good news for Johnson, who will certainly have a hefty bit of competition around him. Obviously, much of the talk surrounding Ohio State’s corners next season has focused on guys like Cameron Brown, Amir Riep and Sevyn Banks. However, especially with more than three or four guys likely to see playing time, Johnson could certainly cut out a role for himself in his third year with the program.

Is his "window" gone or can Coombs resurrect his career? I once thought Marcus Hooker would never get playing time but to his credit he is a player now. Johnson has to stay healthy. He has the talent.

Only a true junior with some minor health issues and everyone who has played in front of him will be drafted.

So no, his window isn't gone. Look at Cooper, who I expect to be huge for us at DE. Sometimes the windows open up when needed.

His window is clearly not gone, but this year is that window. I'm looking forward to seeing what he and Kerry can do together!

Riep certainly opened things up, as he was a top-3 CB. Wint did not clear as much room.
