DB Tyvis Powell (National Champion)

Hard to believe he went undrafted. He'll get signed quickly as a UFA...

I'm surprised so many people find it hard to believe, or are surprised, that he went undrafted. I thought it was definitely possible he would go undrafted. There's combine measurables, and then there's the tape. Tyvis excelled at the former, and not so much at the latter. Look, I'll be cheering for Tyvis to succeed in the NFL more than anyone, and I'd be more than happy to be wrong on this one. But I think a lot of the people posting "I'm shocked" tonight either have scarlet and gray colored glasses on, or weren't paying that much attention to the games this past fall...

No one is saying the guy is headed for the pro bowl, but a 6'3 safety that runs a sub 4.5 40 who made a lot of big plays at a big time program usually doesn't go undrafted. It should be surprising, and I've been as critical of him as anyone

Not really graduated, had an NC, and was unlikely to raise his draft stock significantly. All the guys he had come in with were leaving. I understand him leaving Marshall was the real head scratcher. Some I could of debated. Some like Apple it paid off for, others like Vonn Bell might have been helped with another year.

You must not have seen many OSU games in 2015 if you're surprised. The NFL isn't exactly high on guys that repeatedly blow angles and let, e.g., guys like Zander Diamont run for 80 yard TD runs. It goes without saying that there are way better athletes than Diamont running the ball in the NFL, 40 speed in a vacuum and height notwithstanding. If you're surprised by Powell not being drafted, then I'd suggest you pay closer attention. As much as I'm cheering for Tyvis to succeed, I'm not surprised.

I didn't think he'd sniff the first 4 rounds, but am rather surprised he missed out on the last 2. He's exactly the kind of player I think you throw a 6th or 7th pick at. Potential is obviously there. Worst case scenario, he's a solid ST or practice squad guy.

Again, you're missing the point. Taking bad angles is, supposedly, coachable. There are a lot of projects with great physical tools that get drafted. He has the measurables, solid production, and comes from great lineage at Ohio State. You're damn right I'm surprised a team didn't try a 6th or 7th round pick on him to see if they could correct those issues.

If you think taking bad angles is Powell's only weakness then, again, you must not have been paying much attention the past few years. Bigger pictures, 32 NFL teams are in agreement with one of us...

I keep thinking of Donny Nickey.

He was the worst deep ball free safety I've ever seen but I'll be damned if he didn't have a great college career and then go and make himself a very long NFL career as a ST ace.

They have different limitations to their games but that's the comp that I keep coming back to for Powell.

Regardless of what his weaknesses were/are, one of my all time favorite guys.
