MICHIGAN STATE NOTEBOOK: WILLIAM WHITE GETS THE GAME BALL, OHIO STATE UNVEILS TATE MARTELL PACKAGE AND SPARTANS MAKE AN UNUSUAL DECISION

During last week’s home game against Nebraska, Ohio State played a video encouraging fans to donate to the William White Family Fund for ALS, in honor of the former Ohio State cornerback who is currently battling ALS.

Following its 26-6 win over Michigan State in East Lansing on Saturday, Ohio State honored White once again.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer announced during his press conference after the game that the Buckeyes awarded the game ball for Saturday’s win to White. White’s son Brendon, who made his first career start for the Buckeyes on Saturday, accepted the game ball on his father’s behalf.

“On behalf of the Ohio State football team and Buckeye Nation, we presented William White the game ball for this game today,” Meyer said. “And it was really kind of cool to see Brendon come up there and take it on behalf on his father. I’ve known William since 1986. He’s a dear friend. One of the smartest guys I’ve ever met, one of the greatest football players I’ve ever met. So I know Buckeye Nation would approve of that.”

Brendon White said “everyone went crazy” and “yelled and cheered” in the locker room when the game ball announcement was made.

“It was pretty cool,” White said. “Not only do I have support for my family and my father’s disease, but having it come from Buckeye Nation, it’s very cool and that’s why this place is so special.”

Ex-Ohio State player resigns after sexual harassment complaint

Former Ohio State and NFL defensive back William White resigned from his role as a fundraiser for the university after an investigation into sexual misconduct, but remained on the organization’s payroll for more than three months following the investigation.

This is according to a report Sunday by the Columbus Dispatch.

White’s son Brendon White, a junior linebacker at Ohio State, entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to a story on Dec. 13.

William White tendered his resignation after allegations surfaced that he kissed a co-worker without consent in February. The internal investigation by human resources was concluded on April 30, but employee records show White remained on the payroll until Aug. 10, which was almost six months after OSU first received a complaint.

White was the director of Community and Corporate Engagement for the College of Engineering. According to the HR investigation, which was obtained by the Dispatch, “White entered a coworker’s cubicle and put his face close to hers, ‘told her to look into his eyes, and then kissed her on the lips.’ He then reportedly attempted to kiss her two more times that day.”

White has denied these allegations.

Ohio State hired White to his position in April of 2018, and he was also serving as an ambassador of the Ohio State Alumni Association.

White played at Ohio State from 1984-87 before spending more than a decade as a safety in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons.

He was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in November of 2016. The disease, which has no known cure, is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord causing muscles throughout the body to atrophy.

William was a classmate and a friend of mine at OSU. Great guy! We studied Metallurgical Engineering together. I remember trying to recruit him to play on our intramurals flag football team - like that was ever going to happen! I was so happy to see him get his degree three years after going pro. I thought that was pretty awesome considering he was in the middle of a pretty good NFL career. This is so sad -- much too young. ALS sucks! RIP William and prayers for his family.

Damn. I never met White when we were students, but I was in a class with Spielman one quarter. Those two spent a lot of years together.

Like Jake, I was at Ohio State when William was there. For over 3 decades I have thought that he more than almost any other Buckeye is not remembered nearly as fondly as he should be. Sometimes, when I post his picture in the countdown thread, I wonder if anyone else remembers him. Although another #37, Joshua Perry, was more decorated, I have always felt that William would have been an all american if he'd played in a scheme that allowed him to show the talent that he displayed for so many years in the NFL. To me, Day 37 of the Countdown has always been William White Day.

He died far too young, like so many other Buckeyes. But ALS has a way of making the end seem like it didn't come too soon, so forgive me for thinking that in some small way it seems fitting that the day that William died was the day that the above picture appeared in the Countdown thread, the day that I have long thought of as William White Day.
