Wouldn't that be kind of a dick move with respect to those recruits though? They now get a chance to make an informed decision about where to sign - it may not turn out well for Rutgers but to me it's the better option ethically in my view.

That's easy to say now, but if he were offered the same job a year ago I bet he would've turned it down.

I could debate both sides of the argument... this could destroy Rutgers for far more than 4 years... because if they can't get back up to where they are.. how many years till other recruits see it as a school worthy of good players... if they have this class intact, I believe there are a number of coaches that can make this a very good team

With the deadline being a week away, these kids can't make an informed decision... gun is to their heads

I think for most head coaches, the NFL is the pinnacle of their profession. Some coaches just chose to stay in college, but once they make the NFL, they don't seem to leave by choice.

*Edit* Well, there was Bobby Petrino...but that guy had a history of job hopping...flirting with other potential employers. And he's an enormous doucherocket.

Bill Walsh went back to Stanford after retiring from SF49. He turned out OK.

Meanwhile, it must be a slappy in the face to PSU that these guys they all assumed would come calling are willing to go elsewhere. Meanwhile Seamus O'Tool is busy coaching the Brady Bunch instead of recruiting. PSU hasn't hit rock bottom yet...

I seem to recall on the Audibles board how there was some anger regarding a former PSU commit who decommitted, committed elsewhere and then decommitted again only to commit to Rutgers. Wonder what THAT kid is thinking now.

They had to do that.. but that's not their best play.. He's a really good coach... but THE stud recruiter is some Italian dude.. Cignetti? he'll be in the mix for the real spot when they get to it..

Recruits, assistants caught unaware

Greg Schiano was supposed to be at Don Bosco Preparatory School promptly at 8 a.m. Thursday morning to recruit some key prospects.
That never happened.
As scheduled, five Rutgers assistant coaches showed up at the Ramsey, N.J., school, which showcases several highly rated prospects each year. The coaches were focused on securing current commitment Leonte Carroo, a three-star receiver, and Darius Hamilton, a four-star defensive end who is primarily considering the Scarlet Knights and Florida.
"The coaches were kind of shocked," Don Bosco coach Greg Toal said. "They said 'Coach Schiano, he's never late for anything.' "
At first, the coaches thought Schiano might have gotten caught up in another meeting, despite the importance of the Don Bosco appointment.
"They didn't think it was any big deal," Toal said of their initial response. "They didn't know that he was in negotiations or anything like that."
Then, when reports began to surface that Schiano had accepted the head coaching job for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Rutgers assistants were caught unaware.
"No one knows where this is going right now," Toal said. "I'm sure it caught a lot of people off guard."
With six days before national signing day, Rutgers suddenly finds itself in an incredible time crush to secure its 2012 class.
