Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

Before we anoint Fickell with defensive sainthood let's please recall he was also part of some of the worst defensive play we have ever seen at OSU (see above)

Before we engage into much hyperbole, I was just stating that I don't know how much of a part he played in that defense. What was his role in the 2016 defense that changed in 2017? Did he start to game plan the defense in 2017? In 2017 was he responsible for in game adjustments?

2013 defense was worse in terms of points per game, yards per game, average opponent QB rating and pretty much any other stat you could want to look at.

I really didn’t know the 2013 group was worse and I would ask, is that through 8 games or for the whole season?

I would also say that when the 2013 defense is statistically worse, it appears with my eyes and what I see happening, this group actually is worse. Statistics be damned.

Also that 2013 D was undefeated through 12 games. So at the very least they held it together longer and didn’t get embarrassed by a .500 Purdue squad.

I like the stats and analysis here from DBB, Jax etc... but they are just that,
Stats. You take them and apply them how you will. What I’m really getting at is that the 2018 group collectively “looks” like the worst group I can remember on the field. Apparently they’re still not the worst on paper. So I guess they have that going for them.

I agree with the coaches part(except for LJsr, the DL has held up their end of the bargain), but I disagree about the players. There's still top flight talent on this team

I absolutely agree with the talent part. My concern is with regards to the scheme (on the defensive side) and the players they are recruiting. Are the right players for the scheme being recruited? Couple that with some questionable coaching and you have the potential of a shit show like we saw last night.

That's saying something considering what we all watched in 2013.
This is much worse than 2013 IMO... Both run and pass defense blow. In 2013 it was mainly just the pass defense.

This is a whole new level. I haven't seen this had of a defense in my lifetime.

I kept saying all year to my wife when we watch the games together... "the defense is just so bad" and there's just no other way to sugar coat it. This is a bad defense and there's nothing that we do well really.

The talent of the players that we're bringing in on defense, scheme shouldn't matter. We're not running super difficult schemes, this isn't an NFL ultra disguise defense. We're playing with guys who were the best in America at their respective positions. The coaches are not putting them in positions to succeed, and they're paid VERY WELL to do so

They have zero 1-techs and don’t change coverages....ever.

The worst problem in my eyes, is you cannot just shit can what you have done all spring, fall, and season when it comes to coverages. BUT, we need to install a few simple zone coverages that can be picked up quickly and they have to be used to mix up and confuse the O Coors a LITTLE damn bit. We are just too predictable. We have to stop this bullshit of walking our LBs up in the damn middle of the LOS all of the time too, it isn't working.

There has been a pretty big shift from a 4-3 to a 3-4 throughout the country as well. Maybe it is time to rethink our 4-3. I know it takes different personnel, but something to consider.

Bud Foster doesn't line up the same damn way every week and run the same damn coverage 95% of the time. Nor does Venebal.
