Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

Say what you will, the Bud Foster comment was on the level of what I would expect to come from Donny / Taos love child while tripping balls following a week long payote bender.

That might be the most offensive god damn thing I've heard in a long time.

And keep in mind I was told I looked terrible wearing a turtle neck in a picture from the 90's once.

If we gave up half a hundred to a 2-7 1AA team like Bud did early this year there would be mass rioting and looting.

Where TF you think we getting those couches from? Burning our own hard earned money!?!? No sir

The defense played much better, however I do not like this new corner bail-out shit where they run a simple stop route or back shoulder for at least 8 damn yards on us at will. That shit needs to end now. There is a reason you do not see other top defensive teams doing that shit.

It’s called cover three and every football team on planet earth runs it.

Fuck that... we need to keep doing it.

6 points against and no big plays? Yet you want the style that constantly gave up big plays?

Kinda hard to evaluate the technique based on stat lines and say it’s a good one considering the QB today had a broken wing.
Plus these were second and third string receivers for MSU. Their top guys are out. It seemed an odd strategy based on the personnel MSU had for the game. Did it work, yes this week. MSU was on our receivers like flies on shit.

Yup. As a coach, I don’t mind having a couple of games like this where you know you’re getting the best they have got (at the time), but still allowing you to work out some fundamentals. Practice is one thing, but working through a situation where the other guy wants to take your head off, is another. Basically: Game reps > practice reps.

Not completely convinced yet, and frankly, won’t be until after the tsun game, but I am, nonetheless encouraged by a lot of what I saw defensively — both from players as well as schematically.

I am also encouraged a bit by what we saw of the run game. The run D is their strength and a case can be made for us being more effective on the ground than in the air. Not sure if it was weather / wind or what, but the passing game seemed a bit off — especially in light of their front seven being their strength. I guess, statistically it wasn’t terrible. 61% completion rate with a couple of bad drops in there and still 227 yards? Not too far off a 250 yard game.

So, another tune up game for UMD. I know that Urban is preparing them for that, but I hope that the majority of the time between now and tsun is spent on that game. I do think that they are playing better than anyone in the B1G right now, but I also think they are very beatable. Keys will be discipline on defense and keeping our LBs in a position to make a play (nice to see Tuf looking like his speed is coming back). Not sure that I’m keen on the CBs playing turn and run. It’s just too easy to cut the route short for a comeback. They’ll see that plenty on film post MSU. Plenty of time to fix that a bit. Just stay closer and be more aware of the receiver. Ultimately, they’ll have to be stout against the run and deal with Patterson when he decides to take off. Offensively, they need to watch film on Winovitch and pay attention to the RT spot to bring help before it becomes a problem. I’m not overly concerned about Gary. I think he’s soft and slow, but Chase will give Prince fits. Designing a new screen-ish play that that is more up and over as opposed to over then up, I think will be a good way to keep him a bit more honest. Frankly, he’s the one player on that team that I think dictates the outcome in their favor or not.

No that was not cover three and I know what zones are trust me. In cover three corners are not covering 5 to 7 yard routes on the side line. That was still man coverage but they were using their new "release" technique or some stupid shit the commentators mentioned several times during the broadcast that they were told by Schiano. It sucked. They threw numerous stop routes on the side lines and out routes right behind the corners because they had released and ran at the snap.

Why is it stupid as shit? Well they totally give up inside leverage from the get go. They make themselves completely vulnerable to the stop, back shoulder, and out, and more importantly anything across the middle without inside leverage. It was not cover three.

That new bullshit technique had zero to do with giving up big plays. The corners are still in man coverage. Big plays have hurt us because the linebackers have been out of position on run fits, the safeties have taken bad angles, and we were in man coverage. Well we are still in man coverage only now we give up inside leverage and don't get our hands on the X or Z at the snap. Stupid shit and a good team will make our corners look foolish.

Same players that got burnt all year so not sure why we would put ourselves in that situation again.

I'll gladly give up a few 5-10 yard plays if it meand avoiding the 50+ yard plays. Which we have and you can't deny it's helped to give a little cushion once in a while.

We aren't doing it exclusively so it's not like we dont press anymore. I've noticed we bail on early downs and then press late. I think our strategy is limit big plays, get them in third and long, and then come after them
