Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

I don’t get the excitement over losing Schiano.

A proven HC. What he did at Rutgers is first ballot material.
NFL HC experience.
A proven recruiter.
Has been a DC of some elite defenses.

By contrast Grinch has accomplished none of the above. I realize he is younger.
But the Wazzo D was never good, was better this year when he left.
He has never recruited in a tier 1 pool.
And anyway you slice it the safety play and personnel choices were queered up.

There I said.

I feel like Schiano was Urban’s security blanket and he can provide valuable guidance to our HC who has never been a HC at any level.

I can see excitement over losing Davis

I think this "Schiano sucks" narrative is completely off base.
I think it comes mostly from his refusal to do something different when it's clear the scheme was broken for the players we had this year. Hes a good coach but anyone watching could see press man with the linebackers on the line of scrimmage was getting us killed. So do something anything but don't keep putting the players in the same spots to fail. Now they did make some adjustments the bail technique but it seemed he was stubborn with this is what we are going to run and it's up to players to execute it.

As D Coor, he designed and chose this POS scheme. It has been abysmal. It is not the talent that is giving up the points our D does. I know you don't think we have as much talent as we have had, and you are probably correct, but I can't understand for the life of me how we are ranked 9th in the B1G in Total Defense and 67th in the country. That is 100% on Schiano.

and he designed and chose the scheme that delivered the 7th best total defense in CFB last year.

I just can't wrap my mind around thinking a guy forgets how to coach in one season

I agree. Our D was nasty last year. I will give him credit for that. I guess I am just pissed after watching this shit show this year. I just do not understand some of the shit we had to watch as I scratched my head and just wondered in amazement how he could do some of that shit.

Granted, all of the coaches should know way more football than we do. But, some of the stuff is basic and common sense.

I get that you cannot just trash what you have been doing since spring and suddenly throw in an entirely new defense. However, he did not make adjustments over the course of the year and we were vulnerable to the same stuff over and over and over again and it was embarrassing.

So GS presided over a killer D in 2017, but at the same time followed it up with one of the worst I have seen at OSU in 30 years.

I'm with you in frustration and something was clearly amiss this year.

I think it was a combination of things and don't believe losing Schiano is such a good thing.

What "changed" was Davis' hiring. And if I'm GS, I'd be a bit reserved - my tenure and experience notwithstanding - pushing around one of my boss' pals.
It's just basic office politics.

Our defense was not nasty last year... unless you're thinking of 2016??

2nd half adjustments were mostly aces this season. My guess is the steadiness and experience of Schiano was behind that.

Now, he’s likely also at fault for the predictable coverages to start- everyone knows to expect press man on the outside and let the athletes on the line do their thing. Don’t ask me about the LBs because no one knew what they were doing.

Schiano is worth keeping around in my book. Give him year 2 with Grinch, return this group, fix the damn LBs and let’s go.
