Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Recruiting Genius. Above average position coach. NOT a coordinator. Just my opinions
The evidence thus far seems to support this position.

However, I think he’s being handicapped by 1.) Day making him run Hafley’s deep safety system he’s almost certainly not overly familiar with and 2.) the DB talent/experience is down right now and hopefully can get a lot better over the course of this season.

The off season and opportunities to fine tune things with a normal schedule were not there this year.

This also isn’t the first time that Indiana has given fans serious reservations about the defense and DBs.

I don’t think it’s quite this bad, but it also clearly needs to get better.

Whatever they are doing just throw it out and start over... I understand that "you cant just change what you do mid season" but does it really matter when we are playing the way we are in the back half?

We had two weeks to prepare for these guys and we still couldn't hold them from throwing for basically 500 yards.

Theres probably no way around this but I do not expect us to be competent the rest of the year if I'm being honest. Some here can call me out for this if you want but I also expect it will be what costs us if we make the playoffs.

2013, 2017, and in 2018 you just knew that no matter what we would continue doing the same scheme. This feels a lot like that doesnt it?

Early returns are this guy is not Hafley. I understand some personnel has dropped off and Hafley may be one of the best defensive minds in the game, but Cooms is so far behind on individual technique, scheme and playcalling (zone/man/mix).

I get that, but swap personnel between the two years and how good does Hafley look? You lost your top 3 DB's and the nation's sack leader. Hafley probably isn't at BC if that's the case.

IMO they should be letting the true fresh get some playing time, Ransom and Martinez can in no way be worse than what is out there. But you have to make better adjustments, that 100% is something we can put on Coombs.

Against Illinois and MSU we should at least let the young kids play. Williamson looks lost out there and he's been in the program long enough to know the ropes, Hooked looks like a liability in space. And has Johnson even played? Because he hasn't showed much on film. Might as well throw Watts, Ransom and Martinez in the mix and see what they can do the next few games

I still think Hafley looks really good! BC was the 101st ranked defense last year, they are 53rd right now this year. I’d say that’s a pretty substantial improvement. And he has much less talent than he would have at Ohio State.
