The Steelers have exercisedtheir 2015 option on defensive end Cameron Heyward, the club said Tuesday morning.

The move comes after the 24-year-old Heyward had a breakout 2013 season for Pittsburgh, setting career-highs in tackles (59) and sacks (five). He also defended seven passes. Most importantly, he established himself as a core member of a defense that has desperately needed to get younger.

The Steelers selected the 6-foot-5, 288-pound Heyward with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2011 draft. He was a backup in his first two NFL seasons before garnering a starting role in 2013.

According to salary figures reported last week by NFL Media’s Albert Breer, Heyward is slated to make$6.969 million in 2015.

An Ohio State product, Cameron Heyward is the son of the late Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, who had an 11-season NFL career as a running back / fullback.

Mike80 A MAN OF BETRAYED JUSTICE!

With this incident (and many others) along with the NFL not allowing DeAngelo Williams to wear pink, the NFL has made it clear that if they can't gain notoriety or money out of something, they aren't going to approve of it.

ScriptOhio Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.

It's not like he was calling attention to a religion, suspended player, and/or commercial product, etc. The NFL should show some compassion here and suspend the fine; it's not too much different than wearing pink wrist bands and/or shoe laces (i.e. cancer awareness). However, they probably won't because they don't want the NFLPA to use it as a precedent in any similar cases that might occur in the future. Also, the NFL (Goodell) is already pissed about losing to Brady (on his "deflategate" suspension) in court, Goodell is not likely to concede anything.

  14. Cam is PFF's #7 graded interior defender on the year, behind Donald, Atkins, Wilkerson, Watt, Jaye Howard, and Calais Campbell... pretty elite company.
