DE Chase Young (Nagurski, Hendricks, Bednarik, Silver Football, NFL DROY, New Orleans Saints)

I haven't re-watched The Game so anyone can explain what changed on defense to shut down the scUM passing attack? Whatever it was was great halftime defensive adjustments! Brilliant!

There isn’t one singular dynamic but here’s my opinion.

We blitzed a tad in the second half and Riep settled a bit in coverage. He had some serious issues early but he seemed to hit a groove.

Further, the defensive line seemed to start winning individual matchups and Patterson faced far more pressure in the second half which resulted in errant and/or rushed throws. His wideouts also dropped 4 passes in the second half
That's what surprised me. Wisconsin has a better line, but maybe they just didn't commit to doubling him every play? Seems like ttun's #1 concern was doing that, but hopefully that's the only remaining game where it works.

As a sidenote, I was surprised by how obsessed LSU fans were with his performance. Seems like there was legit fear an 'overrated' player would steal it from Burrows. :bored: Don't think that was ever a legit concern, and certainly not now. They can have the QB MVP award. Just want to watch 3 more games of dominance from Chase.
I think Wisky thought they could leave Chase one on one. I’m sure they will double team in the championship game, so Smith and Harrison HAVE to step it up

I’d have liked to see have seen us kick him down to DT like we used to do with Bosa brothers to free up Cooper and Tyreke Smith on ends, and likely get a 1 on 1 match-up with an OG (on obvious passing downs).

I’m not sure if we have that in our playbook but I think it’d free others up when teams are planning to double team him. Michigan was giving help to whichever OT he was lined up against all day, with a lot of effectiveness.

Was waiting for that too. Let him attack the guards with his quickness up the middle every once in a while.

Thought we had done that with him before. Definitely did with the Bosas.

Chase significantly affected the passing game in the second half despite not having any tackles. Every time Chase got pressure, Patterson either threw the ball away in fear (one of which should have been an intentional grounding), or forced Patterson into getting sacked by a teammate. And, when you consider that the Buckeyes were down Wade, Proctor, and at times Arnette in the second half, it was pretty amazing that Patterson was effectively shut down in that stage of the game.

Not his best day, but when you're doubled every play and held as well, you're going to have those. Played a really good 2nd half IMO and was upbeat no matter what. Love to see this dude dance on the sideline as the offense runs out the clock.

Agreed and in the 2nd half, he started taking over. TTUN couldn't keep guys in to chip him every play once they got down and Chase was blowing throw the line and forcing Patterson to get rid of the ball before anyone could get open. It will be interesting to see if Wisky is able to make any adjustments to slow him down, but I get the feeling they won't. One of their biggest issues is that Coan is a statue and basically just went to the ground when Chase came breaking through.
