Lane Kiffin raves about Chase Young, Jeff Okudah ahead of draft

Amid the final countdown to the 2020 NFL draft, it's clear new Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has plenty of respect for two Ohio State prospects that are projected to go early in the first round: defensive end Chase Young and cornerback Jeff Okudah. Kiffin knows first-hand how difficult it is to solve those two, after all, as his final season at FAU this past fall kicked off with a non-conference affair in Columbus against the Buckeyes.

In a Tuesday night interview with Scott Van Pelt, Kiffin recalled the experience of going up against the projected first-round picks last August in what ultimately resulted in a 45-21 win for Ohio State. Long story short, Kiffin doesn't see either Young or Okudah being any less effective in the NFL than they were in college.

“Way different type of big when you’re on the field with (Chase Young). I’d seen him on film. Great player and everything. Then all of a sudden it’s the first quarter and he’s running by. This guy is the Predator out there. That’s what he looks like. No one can touch this guy. He’s just destroying everything.”

Young, a Heisman finalist in 2019, is widely projected to head to the Washington Redskins as the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. Okudah is regarded as the top cornerback in this year's draft, and while projections for him have varied, it is likely that he could be taken within the top five.

Young led the nation with 16.5 sacks during his junior season of 2019, which was a new school record at OSU. He was named the Big Ten's Silver Football Award winner (league MVP), making him the first defensive player from OSU to win the award in its 95-year history. Young also won the Bednarik Award as the top defensive player in college football, and was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

As a sophomore in 2018, Young led Ohio State with 10.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles-for-loss. During his true freshman season of 2017, Young collected 3.5 sacks and five TFLs. A native of Hyattsville, Md., Young was ranked as the No. 2 weak-side defensive end and the No. 7 overall prospect in the country in the 2017 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Unlike a QB Chase Young is in the catbird seat ..a pass rusher controls his own destiny. Especially on a team with enough line talent to prevent continuous double teams. I expect Chase to get off to a fast start because NFL offenses will be in a show me mode for the first handful of games.
