DE Chase Young (Nagurski, Hendricks, Bednarik, Silver Football, NFL DROY, New Orleans Saints)

INSIDE THE BOX: JUSTIN FIELDS' EFFICIENCY, CHASE YOUNG IS THE BEST LINEMAN OF THE DECADE, OFFENSIVE BALANCE

IS CHASE YOUNG THE BEST OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THIS DECADE?

The Predator has a legitimate chance to go down as the most prolific pass rusher in program history.

With 7.0 sacks through four games, he is exactly halfway to Vernon Gholston's record of 14.0 sacks, a mark that was accomplished in 2007. Young, barring injury, will play at least eight more games in the scarlet-and-gray, giving him ample opportunity to surpass Gholston's mark.

Since 2013, the Buckeyes have been blessed with a future top-three pick in Joey Bosa, his brother Nick, and now Chase Young. One could make the argument that Young will end his career as the best of that trio.

Assuming Young continues his career pace of 0.769 sacks per game, the third-year defensive end would tie Gholston's record in nine games, or the start of postseason play.

Considering his monster start to the season, it should not be surprising if he breaks the mark against Michigan or Penn State. As Big Ten play begins, however, his sack totals will likely start to dip. Last season, Young finished the regular season with just six sacks before exploding for four more in the postseason.

Even if he does slow down, the third-year defensive end has proved himself to be the best pass rusher in the nation.

Over the past four seasons, since Washington's Hau'oli Kikaha recorded 19 sacks in 2014, only one player has gone over 17 sacks: Louisiana Tech's Jaylon Ferguson last season.

A foursome of pass-rushers is threatening to top 17 this fall. Ohio State's Chase Young (eight sacks in five games) is the biggest name on the board, and if the Buckeyes end up playing 14 or 15 games, he could not only top 20 but threaten 25. Going back to last season, he has 12 sacks in his past seven games; he is terrifying.

He's not alone, though. USC transfer Oluwole Betiku Jr. has given Illinois a legitimate havoc man up front; he's not only got seven sacks in four games, but he has 10.5 total tackles for loss as well. Even with Illinois unlikely to make a bowl, he's got a chance at a 30-TFL, 20-sack season in just 12 games. Boise State's Curtis Weaver (six sacks in four games) and Iowa State's O'Rien Vance(5.5 in four) are also threats to top the 17-sack mark, but Betiku and Young are sucking up most of the pass-rushing oxygen right now.

His stats don't even tell the tale on how dominant Chase has been. He disrupts damn near every play and even when he doesn't make the tackle, he makes the play. I can't even count how many times the ball carrier was running for the lives away from Chase and ran into another defender. I'm also off the opinion that Chase is the top player in CFB right now, he's that good.

Absolutely! He’s playing better than Clowney (sophomore season) Myles Garrett, or either Bosa. Those are the four that come to mind when I think of the great College DE’s over the last 10 years or so. Just ridiculous!

His stats would be even more impressive if:

1) Ohio State didn't rotate the defensive linemen.

2) he got to play a full 4 quarters.

You can see how the playing time was distributed among the DEs:

The staff seems to be playing the long game. And not the long game that ends this season. The reps that the young ones are getting will pay significant dividends next year. As far as this year goes, imagine what keeping Chase’s ankles healthy will do for the team in Nov / Dec / Jan.

Honestly the most Dominant I've seen a Dlineman over the years in college was Suh or Bosa in the notre dame game before he got kicked out. I wouldn't be surprised if chase come up and puts up a game like Bosa's ND this year.
