DE Darius Slade (transfer to Arizona State, transfer to South Florida)

blueshirt?
I had no idea, but:
Meanwhile, blueshirts represent the newest loophole for FBS programs to accumulate depth while not affecting their annual numbers. Like grayshirt recruits, blueshirts are counted toward the next season’s scholarship total.

There is one distinct difference, however. Unlike grayshirts, a blueshirt is able to enroll and participate in team events in the fall. This allows programs to get the best of both worlds: FBS schools can delay a scholarship for the following year, allowing them to over-sign beyond the 25-scholarship limit, and get the use of a prospect immediately rather than waiting until the following spring.

The use of a blueshirt was first popularized by New Mexico State, which would support its numbers by enrolling prospects right after the beginning of the fall semester and then place them on scholarship. Tennessee has also embraced the use of blueshirts under coach Butch Jones.

there are even more "___shirts", fyi.
To be honest, I'm not sure why undergrad transfers count against the 85-man limit to begin with. Either don't have them count until eligible to play (in Slade's case, 2018), or make all transfers immediately eligible.
Let everyone take 25 every year. Period. No incentive to run guys off or lie about injuries.

Let them transfer and sit out for six games. There's a penalty but they can still pursue a career.

If we did this, then wouldn't we be going back to the days where schools stockpiled talent at the expense of other schools?

I like this idea....

OK, so to get this thread back on topic, I don't know the extent to which shedding the black stripe is based on the frosh demonstrating he's ready to play on Saturdays, vs. being based on demonstrating great effort in practice. Or something else.

But I will say this: in my opinion, Darius Slade is a truly kick-ass name for a speed-rushing, quarterback-crushing defensive end. Or a Mike Hammer/Shaft private detective.
Hey, I was right.

Report: Darius Slade transferring to South Florida
ByPATRICK MURPHY 20 hours agoNathan Bond@BullsNathanSBNSLIGHTLY bigger news: unless there’s someone with the exact same name,

Arizona State and Ohio State transfer defensive end Darius Slade is enrolled at #USF.

Big boost for the defensive line.

Coming out of Montclair High School in Montclair, New Jersey, Slade was a high three-star recruit, the country's 42nd best strong-side defensive end and the 891st ranked player in the nation in the 2014 class according to the 247Sports Composite. After initially committing to Nebraska in December of 2013, Slade de-committed a month later, on the same day he received an offer from the Scarlet and Gray.

Slade committed to Ohio State on National Signing Day in 2014 and signed his letter of intent that day. The defensive end enrolled the following June.

After a redshirt year in 2014, Slade played in seven games for the Buckeyes in 2015 but did not record any statistics. Unfortunately, Slade ruptured his Achilles in the fall camp leading up to the 2016 season and missed the full year while recovering.

It was after the 2016 season that Slade elected to transfer and wound up at Arizona State. After sitting out the one year required by NCAA rules, in which Slade was named the Sun Devils' co-defensive Most Valuable Player for the scout team, Slade saw action in six games for Arizona State, recording eight total tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Slade suffered another injury that saw him miss time for the Sun Devils.
