DE Jamel Turner (Butler Community College; transfer to Akron)

Teenage Girl Killed in Youngstown Shooting

A teenage girl is dead and another teen is in critical condition Saturday night after a double shooting on Youngstown's westside.

Police found 17-year-old Tracy Banks dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside a house on Manchester Street. Police also found 18-year-old Jamel Turner shot mutliple times lying by a stop sign at the corner of Manchester and Oakwood. Turner is an Ohio State Football recruit. He was taken to Saint Elizabeth's hospital.

A 4-year-old found inside the home said she heard Banks arguing with someone before the shooting. Police believe that may be 18-year-old Melvin Shaw of Youngstown. He is African-American, 5-feet 7-inches tall, 150 pounds with brown eyes.

So far no arrests have been made.

Tressel on Turner

No sooner did I post that last update than this popped into my e-mail inbox.....

A statement from Jim Tressel regarding Jamel Turner:

"I'm so sad to hear of Jamel's misfortune. I have not communicated with Jamel, but am certainly praying for him at this time."

It certainly sounds to me like Tressel and Turner have not spoken in months, since maybe sometime around signing day back in February. When Turner left Fork Union, Tressel said they had not spoken. When Turner was shot in April, he again said they had not spoken.

My feeling is Tressel was not going to come out and publicly pull Turner's scholarship, or kick him off the team, or whatever people wanted him to do. That's not his style.

His style is to let things run their course, and in this case, Turner unfortunately made it all a moot point. I'm doubtful that he graduated from high school, so even if Turner recovers from his wounds, he would be ineligible to play college football.

Don't care if he ever see's the football field at this point, I only wish him well in some sort of recovery... and I hope that (in some meaningful way) Ohio State and Jim Tressel can get a hold of him to change his life.

I hope for Jamel's best out of a very tragic incident.

Coach Jim Tressel issued a statement Saturday night saying, "I'm so sad to hear of Jamel's misfortune. I have not communicated with Jamel, but am certainly praying for him at this time."
Turner was ruled academically ineligible before graduating from Ursuline, and enrolled at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, where he played football last fall. But he left the academy earlier this year.

Tragic no matter how one spins it. I can't imagine how devastated the young girls parents must be.

Source: Turner "hour by hour"

Late last night, the internet was abuzz with reports that OSU recruit Jamel Turner had died of his gunshot wounds.

A short while ago, I received a text from someone close to Turner, saying those reports were premature. The source said Turner's status was "hour to hour" but that if he had made it through the night, he stood a good chance of surviving.

That's the latest.
