DE Joey Bosa (Def ROY, 3x Pro Bowl, Los Angeles Chargers)

Why Joey Bosa's mom feels they should have 'pulled an Eli Manning'

San Diego Chargers first-round pick Joey Bosa is nowhere close to training camp, his agent and the team haven’t spoken in several days and panic is starting to set in on both sides.

Now you can start to see why Bosa’s mother posted a comment on Facebook saying she wished they had “pulled an Eli Manning,” via the San Diego Union-Tribune by way of SD Bolt Report, which wrote about the post first.

Cheryl Bosa’s full comment on Sunday, writing to a friend: “It bums me out for him so much. Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day.”

Too bad he can't come back to Ohio State for his senior year and then go back in the NFL draft in 2017.

Some further detail on the bonus-payment schedule negotiations:

The Chargers and Ayrault have been unable to close the gap over how much of Bosa's $17 million signing bonus will be paid out in 2016, the remainder being deferred into next March.
San Diego's best offer featured an 85 percent cash payout in 2016, sources said, or $14,464,630. While a source said that Ayrault has budged from seeking a 100 percent cash payout of Bosa's bonus in 2016, it was felt the payout percentage was not large enough to end an impasse that has forced Bosa to miss all of training camp and now likely all of the preseason.
...
In a span from July 28 to Tuesday, they moved from a 57 percent cash payout this calendar year to an 85 percent payout, sources said. In that span, Ayrault was unwilling to make a similar-sized leap. He went from a 100 percent cash payout this calendar year to a number higher than 85 percent, one that allows for a seven-figure cash deferment to 2017, sources said.

So the Chargers came into this saying "we'll pay you 57% of your bonus this year", which got the negotiations off to a pretty bad start.
