DE Joey Bosa (Def ROY, 3x Pro Bowl, Los Angeles Chargers)

So tell me again how Eli Manning ended up in New York.

Right. Bosa should have taken that track right from the git-go.

Ironically, yesterday was the anniversary of Philip Rivers signing his rookie contract and ending his holdout, which occurred two weeks after he too rejected the Chargers' "Best & final offer."

You would think the players union would get involved at some point wouldn't they?

You have a collectively bargained pay slot and a team trying to pay less than that slot.

maybe too simplified, I'm not a Ubet

I have to guess that the players association has a LOT to do with what's going on. I'm sure that there is significant pressure from the union to not take the offer. The union and agents are all working, my guess, in the same direction. Sadly, I'm also guessing, that Joey would be quite happy to take the deal that is on the table so he could get on the field again. From my perspective, he's a pawn... and incredibly valuable pawn in this mess.

If that's the case, then the players' union is doing the right thing by the players longterm. These deferrals on "signing" bonuses are ridiculous. Franchises shouldn't get to sit on money, collecting interest on that money, which is supposed to belong to the player at signing. The practice must come to end. Good for Bosa, his agents, and the union for taking a stand. The NFLPA is the weakest union in sports. Their players cave into unreasonable franchise demands all the time because they can't afford to take a stand. Bosa can. About damn time.

I'm not sure about this, Joey seems fairly intelligent I'm sure he knows/did his homework on what the previous #3 picks got. Does he want to be on the field, absolutely but if it was up to him I'm not sure he just takes whatever deal is on the table.

Add in the fact that this is also a way that teams are trying to cover their ass. Chris Landry was on the radio last night and said that what the team, in theory, at least, is doing by deferring money is that if Bosa (or any player) is cut and signs with another team, then that team is responsible for whatever guaranteed bonus money hasn't been paid yet. In essence, trying to protect against a draft bust by not paying all the money up front. But, as he then pointed out, no team is going to give up on a #3 pick within at least 3 years, so it is entirely pointless because the money will all be paid out by then anyway. So, SD looks stubborn AND stupid.

Joey would obviously be taking quite a risk by sitting out this year. The same could be said of the Chargers, however. Giving up your first round pick for the 2016 draft is quite a blow for a team that is attempting to rebuild from a 4-12 season. Not to mention the effect that it will have on future draft picks. If I am a guy that is being considered as a top 3 pick and I know that San Diego is going to make me sign a contract that includes language that no other top 3 pick has been required to have in their contract since the 2011 CBA, I am going to put it out there before the draft that San Diego would be wasting a pick if they picked me. What kind of leverage do you have as the Chargers if you are trying to trade your pick and all of the top picks have essentially said that they will not play for you?

I'm guessing Joey's input accounts for about 2% of this whole thing. This isn't John Bosa's first rodeo. He was himself a 1st rounder in 1987 and was out of football after two major knee injuries and all of 31 NFL games.

You get all the money you can up front. Most NFL draft picks will get one contract negotiation for their entire career. One. The really, really lucky ones that avoid injury and stick for 10+ years maybe get three.

This:

"And it really is irrational. The Chargers don’t need offset language, because the only reason they’d cut Bosa in the next four years is if he did something like get injured (in which case insurance would cover them) or get suspended for drugs (in which case his guarantees would void and the offsets would be moot)."
