Coach Vrabel and Coach Fickell certainly have their boys fired up...got em teeing off the quarterback, the mascot

Students better keep their head on a swivel walking around campus

Vrabel's recruiting prowess, his pro experience, and now his awesome tutor:

Familiar Face
Vrabel was getting a little coaching of his own on Wednesday from former Ohio State assistant Jim Heacock. Vrabel played under Heacock back when he was the defensive line coach in Columbus during the mid 1990s, and the two spent some time talking as they walked off the practice field.
After a year away from the game, Heacock has been to nearly every one of Ohio State?s 13 spring practices this year. He served as the school?s defensive line coach from 1996-2004 and defensive coordinator from 2005-2011.

The 64-yeard old Heacock was not retained as an assistant by Meyer, who had coached under him at Illinois State in the late 1980s, when the new staff took over. He has been asked to make himself at home around the program, though he recently told The-Ozone he isn?t sure exactly what his new role will be.

Hands-on Vrabel making an impact
June, 25, 2013
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The workout itself is relatively simple, and Mike Vrabel isn?t opposed to sharing it with anybody driven enough, or perhaps crazy enough, to try it.

So in a high school science lab in Detroit, the Ohio State defensive line coach stands in front of a room full of campers to demonstrate how they can build their strength, improve their ability to fight off blockers and maybe get a vice-grip handshake just like that of a 14-year NFL veteran.

All they have to do to get started is swap out the dry-erase board Vrabel is chopping with his unprotected hands for a brick wall.

AP Photo/Jay LaPreteMike Vrabel uses "violent hands" to wave a player off the field in 2012.

?We worked with a couple guys in New England that were big on martial arts, big with playing with violent hands,? Vrabel said. ?We developed that idea that we?d go over there and just pound our hands against a brick wall and try to make them as strong as we possibly could.

?I told my guys, it?s the same reason Bruce Lee used to kick a tree.?

Vrabel was turning his hands into weapons of destruction back then, and while they?re every bit as powerful now as they were during his playing days, they?ve since become tools of construction heading into his third season on the sidelines as an assistant coach at Ohio State.

He?s not afraid to use them with his players, either, and his hands-on approach combined with the rest of a body recently removed from a long, productive career in the NFL has clearly made him a valuable asset for the Buckeyes.

How incredible (and sad?) is it that Vrabel has more career NFL receiving touchdowns than Teddy Ginn?

It isn't sad for Vrabel, he had a great "career receiving record", especially considering he is a defensive player. Vrabel had an outstanding career, 14 years in the NFL with 3 rings. :tongue2:

OSU's Vrabel brings player mentality to coaching

COLUMBUS ? He was seen as a stop-gap hire two years ago with the Ohio State football program in a state of turmoil.

Now, it?s more about what former Buckeye great Mike Vrabel is doing as a coach and recruiter to help close the gap between his alma mater and Southeastern Conference schools.

?He attacks coaching the same way he attacked playing,? Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said of Vrabel. ?You spend as long as he did in the NFL, you understand an extreme work ethic.?

Still, no one was sure what qualifications Vrabel brought to coaching in a major program when he was hired by OSU in 2011, other than he was best buds with interim coach Luke Fickell, himself a convenient, desperate hire one month before training camp opened after Jim Tressel was forced out for committing NCAA violations.

Some figured Vrabel would be part of the coaching purge when Meyer took over before 2012. Instead, Vrabel was retained and moved from linebackers coach to overseeing the defensive line.

It was one of those no-brainer moves. Vrabel has the OSU and NFL pedigree to command respect from the players and three Super Bowl rings from playing for New England that will catch the attention of distracted or on-the-fence recruits.

As a player, it was up front where Vrabel was twice an All-American and Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year.

It probably didn?t hurt, either, Vrabel?s current boss (Meyer) and former boss (Bill Belichick) are good friends. In working with his linemen, Vrabel has adopted one of Belichick?s mantras: Make the hard look easy.

?I just try to get them to play as hard as they can and with toughness and technique,? Vrabel said. ?I think I can help in all three of those phases.?
