In a year that lacked an overwhelming offensive performance by a freshman, it appeared time to look to the defensive side of the ball. There, we found a player worthy of the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year award.

Defensive lineman Nicholas Bosa played a key role for Florida Class 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas, posting one of the finest ninth grade seasons in the state of Florida in years.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Bosa had more than 50 tackles and six sacks for one of the nation's top programs. He already has an offer from Ohio State, the school to which older brother Joey made a verbal commitment last spring.

He could develop into one of the best players to emerge from Aquinas, which has been an NFL factory over the years.

Bosa headlines a talented group of young players on the 2012 MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team.

Bosa Will Not Be At Friday Night Lights
2016 DE Nick Bosa will not be attending Friday Night Lights.

The four-star prospect was a tentative visitor for the event, but will not make it due to the family traveling a lot recently. Bosa was recently in Chicago with his brother, Joey, this past weekend, and their father, John, will be in Columbus this coming weekend.

The St. Thomas Aquinas product still is favoring Ohio State, with programs like Florida State and Alabama also in the mix. He is expected back for a visit either in August or for a game early this fall.

Can you also imagine the DE rotation in a few years of Jashon Cornell, Dremont Jones, Tyquan Lewis, Tracy Sprinkle, Dylan Thompson, Jalyn Holmes, Darius Slade and whoever else we get in 2015, 2016 and the guys who may grow into a DE currently on the roster

RB, we've been high on quite a few of the same guys over the years, so I figured I'd throw you a bone on this one.

I just went back and rewatched the high school highlights from Clowney, Nkemdiche, Dunlap, Bowers, McCoy and a few other D-linemen who were rated highly over the years. Clowney and Dunlap showed elite athleticism for their size, with Dunlap being bigger and Clowney having the better first step. Bowers and McCoy also showed impressive quickness for wide-bodied SSDE/DT types. Nkemdiche was a powerful player, but wasn't quite as athletic as the other players listed.

That being said, after watching film on all these players back-to-back, I can say this with 100% confidence: Nick Bosa is the best defensive line prospect I have seen in 15 years of following recruiting.

He does just about everything better than all the guys listed above, and he did it as only a sophomore against the best high school talent in America. I started writing out grades for him, and his scores are pretty comical.

Awareness: A
Tackling range: A+
Tackling power: B+
First step: B+
Closing speed: A-
Bull rush: A+
Spin move: B
Block shedding: A+
Pass deflecting: A+
Run stopping: A
Bend: B

Bottom line: If he's a Buckeye and Joey stays all 4 years, we'll have two Bosas starting for us in 2016.

I thought they both play the same position, SSDE? I can see some passing downs where they are both playing, but I am hoping for Sweat starting on the Weak Side in 2016... We'll see. Aniways, it's a good problem to have.

No longer SDE and WDE in Johnson's scheme, more about left and right side. Our DEs will now need to be versatile and interchangeable on either side I believe now.

I respect your opinion, but it may be a little premature. I'd like to see Bosa play the rest of his HS career before I compare him to the guys mentioned, IMO. He has a lot of potential and upside and definitely has the opportunity to be better but were comparing sophomore film to that of seniors who were well known for several years and put up dominant numbers from soph to senior years.

I know we are trending much better with Nick but I can't help but think of our current LB weakness and then think of Jaylon Smith and lack of TE depth and think of Mike Heuerman. That's 2 younger brothers of current stud Buckeyes that I would love to have on roster that we lost to the Domers. I'm therefore not counting my chickens with the younger Bosa and I hope we pursue him just as hard as if he had no history here. I know we pursued the other guys hard too just trying to temper expectations.

True, but don't forget that we landed brothers Boren and Homan. And with this staff, I don't see us letting up on Nick and assuming he's ours. I think Urban and staff know that Nick is an elite leek recruit and it'll be a fight to land him
